Kylian Mbappe is the top scorer in Ligue 1 with 17 goals

Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani scored hat-tricks as Ligue 1 leaders Paris St-Germain put nine goals past Guingamp to earn a record-breaking victory.

It surpassed PSG's previous heaviest victory at the Parc des Princes - 8-0 against Dijon last year.

Their biggest wining margin remains a 10-0 French Cup thumping of Cote Chaude in 1994.

Neymar also scored twice, while Thomas Meunier struck late on against the league's bottom side.

Ten days ago Guingamp had stunned PSG by beating them 2-1 in Paris to reach the semi-finals of the French Cup.

But a similar shock was never on the cards on Saturday as the home side took control from the outset.

Neymar opened the scoring in the 11th minute, driving high into the roof of the net before turning provider for Mbappe, who steered a neat finish into the bottom corner for his first of the match.

Mbappe netted again soon after when he pounced on Felix Eboa Eboa's blocked clearance to make it 3-0 at the break.

PSG did not score again until the hour mark when Cavani turned home Juan Bernat's cross, before the Uruguayan headed in Angel di Maria's ball.

Neymar slid a finish under goalkeeper Marc-Aurele Caillard to join Mbappe and Cavani on two goals - then the latter became the first to complete his treble by bundling the ball in.

Mbappe's third came soon after courtesy of a close-range finish, and Guingamp's misery was complete when Meunier made it nine in the 83rd minute.

    To be fair Guingamp kept it really close right up until the kick off . The ref was totally biased. Every time the ball went into the Guingamp net he awarded PSG a goal.

    Surely it wont be long before the likes of Neymar and Mbappe get bored. Fair enough PSG are becoming a force in the Champions League, but how many Ligue Un titles before they think, "I want some challenge in my career." Maybe they wont, the money is pretty good and Paris is a nice place, but the French league is not improving and the BPL, La Liga or Bundesliga are proper titles to fight for.

    Its all well and good thrashing every team in the French league but it doesnt provide PSG with any sort competition if they wish to become one of the great european teams. Success for them can only be measured in how they do in the Champions league. Being so far ahead of everybody else in January shows how poor the rest of the french league is

    Please do your job properly BBC. The competition that Guingamp beat PSG in was actually the Coupe De La Ligue. The Coupe De France has only just started for top flight clubs and PSG beat Pontivy 4-0 in their opening game.

    I might sound pedantic but you should either be correct or say nothing at all.

    PSG's team is worth €899.65 million. The next closest is Lyon with €389.40 million.

    You could also buy 13 Guingamp squads with the cost of the PSG team.

    Whether people like it or not the fact of the matter is that PSG are running away with things in France as it's not competitive, boring, predictable and until quite recently PSG were not even a big team on the world stage. So there you have it.

    @31 bit harsh....in my opinion british football is still the most interesting..yes im scottish and our league isnt top but the drama and interest is always there. In england the problem is as in all sports money is tainting a once great league. BUT..for my money id rather see a man u or liverpool or arsenal or spurs or everton or southampton or whoever beat a continental team..why...coz im british

    If you like a total one team league, then French football is the place for you. PSG Champions 5 times from the last 6 seasons , and already 13 points ahead of the second placed team. A total mismatch in terms of revenue and spending power. Remember when teams like Marseille, St Ettiene, and Bordeaux used to win the French title. It’s got to get boring soon even for the PSG supporters .
