New Death Stranding trailer introduces Troy Baker and a humongous monster

The Tokyo Game Show 2018 presentation also revealed new characters, cast members and art

Chris Plante co-founded Polygon in 2012 and is now editor-in-chief. He co-hosts The Besties, is a board member of the Frida Cinema, and created NYU’s first games journalism course.

Kojima Productions revealed a new trailer and casting information for the studio’s upcoming Sony exclusive, Death Stranding, to a massive crowd at Tokyo Game Show 2018. The trailer, which clocks in at just over a minute, raises more questions than it answers.

Prolific actor Troy Baker will play the role of a mysterious antagonist who wears a golden skull mask and apparently has the power to manipulate the oily ghouls that roam the game’s planet. In the trailer, the character uses the mask to conjure a beast that is Bloodborne-esque. Why is this fellow so angry? How do these deathly spirits merge Voltron-style into hellbeasts? What genre is this game anyway?

Along with the trailer, the studio announced actor Tommie Earl Jenkins will appear in the game and showed new art for characters played by Jenkins, Baker, Guillermo del Toro, Léa Seydoux and Lindsay Wagner.

Death Stranding is being developed for PlayStation 4. Its release date is unannounced.
