James Mattis visits troops stationed at US-Mexico border

US Defence Secretary James Mattis visited troops near the US-Mexico border a little over two weeks after President Trump dispatched thousands of active-duty forces in anticipation of a Central American migrant caravan.

On Wednesday, US Defence Secretary James Mattis and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen visited US troops stationed at Camp Donna along the border with Mexico, where thousands of soldiers have been deployed in recent weeks.

US troops were sent on the orders of President Donald Trump just ahead of the midterm elections, to prevent a group of asylum seekers from entering the US.

The so-called ‘migrant caravan’ is slowly making its way north through Mexico.
