  • Sweeties have been billed as the 'world's first edible tanning supplement'
  • Its makers claim they can help 'accelerate and enhance the perfect bronze'
  • Now fans have showed off the dramatic results of the tanning sweets

Fans of a new 'edible tanning supplement' have been sharing pictures of their bronzed skin online.

UTan & Tone, which landed in the UK earlier this year, is billed as 'the world's first edible tanning supplement' which work by absorbing plant pigments into the skin through the wall of the cheek.

The product raised eyebrows when it first launched, with some questioning the science behind it, but defiant UTan bosses say they have recorded record sales and have scores of happy customers.

After going viral in March, the London-based company sold out more than six months' worth of stock in just 48 hours, they told MailOnline.

The edible sweeties cost £17.99 for a month's supply (currently on special offer at Superdrug for £14.99, or 25p each).

The health and beauty giant introduced the raspberry flavoured gummies, which promise to boost your tan without sun exposure, to stores up and down the country in March.

Its makers claim the sweets can help 'accelerate and enhance the perfect bronze tone to pale skin' when taken twice a day.

The vegan-friendly supplement is packed with plant nutrients including beta-carotene, lycopene and lutein, and are touted 'more powerful than anything else on the market today'.

The product also contains vitamin C to help with the formation of collagen in the skin.

Mollie Hallam, 18 from Loughborough, said she was impressed by the gummies, calling them a 'game changer'. She wrote: 'I am SO pale naturally and these sweets have made it possible for me to be anything but white, for the first time ever I've been able to say goodbye to fake tan'

Experts at UTan claim they work best when taken twice for two weeks prior to sun exposure - in other words, before heading off on your summer holiday.

A spokesperson told MailOnline: 'UTan & Tone use five natural carotenoids, which are the organic pigments that give plants protection from the sun and their colour.

'They are blended in a unique way to give a more golden yellow shade, and this may be deposited in the skin after three to four weeks, so you may see a golden glow without any sun exposure all year round.'

They insist the product can still boost your tan without the need to catch any rays, when taken over a period of three to four weeks.

They claim the edible treats allow active ingredients to be held in the buccal (cheek) cavity for a 'considerable time', resulting in 'direct absorption' through the membranes in the cheek walls.

And while the supplement has divided shoppers on social media, one happy customer wrote online that they had 'definitely noticed a difference after only a few days'.

Do tanning sweets really work?

Facialist and skincare expert Charlotte Connoley told MailOnline: 'While I would always advocate fake tanning over sunbathing, I would be sceptical of any product that says it can tan you from the inside out, without exposure to UV light.

'Dyeing the skin from within sounds like a scary prospect, and while beta-carotene from the sweets can absolutely discolour the skin, it doesn’t turn it that lovely bronze shade – it’s often more of a sallow tone that’s not especially flattering.

'I would recommend getting your golden glow with a great fake tan instead, like COOLA’s sunless tans, to safely bronze up with no lasting effects – and always remember to apply SPF.'
