Will Congress ever hold our federal agencies accountable for contempt?
The Hill ^ | 7/19/2018 | Jonathan Turley

Posted on 07/19/2018 7:00:52 AM PDT by bitt

FBI official Peter Strzok’s recent testimony before the House Judiciary Committee continued a time-honored practice of elected members of Congress doing nothing about the open contempt of federal departments or agencies and their unelected officials.

Strzok was just the latest in a long procession of officials, from both Democratic and Republican administrations, who refused to answer questions, produce documents, or otherwise comply with the constitutional authority of Congress to exercise oversight. Aside from outraged words of protest or toothless sense-of-Congress resolutions, none — not one — has suffered any serious consequences.

Strzok’s defiance began over a simple number: how many interviews the FBI conducted during its 2016 election investigation. As Strzok looked over to a stone-faced FBI lawyer, Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) exclaimed in frustration, “I’m asking for a number!” Not asking for what anyone said, or even the identity of those interviewed, just the number. Strzok responded with what became a mantra to virtually every query about his role in the Clinton email and Russian collusion investigations: “Counsel for the FBI, based on the special counsel’s equities, has instructed me not to answer.”

NO. Congress is happy with its evolving status as the 7th or 8th co-equal branch of government.

Congress cares not a whit about justice; they care about the cameras.

Congress created all of those agencies to delegate its authority to the Executive Branch. Most of those agencies need to be abolished to force Congress to do its job.

They are afraid to act for a lot of reasons.

Right now one of the big reasons is that the minute they dare take action against a democrat, communist, anarchist, etc. the media rips their throats out.

More than ever we have evidence of a virulent pathogen that infects the entire DeeCee area... especially those in the political, media class...has potentially deadly symptoms!

It causes Democrats to lose their minds, and Republicans (especially RINOs) to lose their spines!!!

So far President Trump has not been infected. Hope he’s immune!

Congress cares not a whit about justice; they care about the cameras getting re-elected.

Agreed. Answer is no. Especially not the FBI and intel agencies that have massive dirt files on them.

Trump needs to step in *now* and re-empower both the house and the senate oversight committees or he will just be a 1 term oddball President from an oddball election. There are many high ranking bureaucrats who have been ‘institutionalized’ in far left ideology and displacing those ranks up there with appointing the right judges for the right court.

Don’t get bogged down Mr. President. Take action now while you can. Mueller and particularly Rosenstein have exposed themselves with the news of 12 more indictments — done purposely to obscure your current message and battlefield victories. It’s the war we need to win.

This is another of the inescapable conclusions in my e-book: No accountability.

The question as posited by Turley is well-stated, but merely rhetorical.

Congress is focused on elections, not doing their job. Then again...when is the last time anyone remembers Congress actually doing their job?

I just gave myself a headache considering a much more appropriate question than Turley’s...

You're both right

Being re-elected is the A-Number 1 priority -- far, far above anything else -- of nearly every politician. And if the cameras weren't there they wouldn't devote much time to holding hearings as untelevised hearings have little affect on their being re-elected.

Contempt? Maybe. Will they ever exercise their real authority, the “Power of the Purse”, and reduce or eliminate their budgets until they understand that the Constitution means what it says? Not one chance in hell!

“Especially not the FBI and intel agencies that have massive dirt files on them.”

No one is asking the question of why there was a concerted attempt to target Democrats (Awans) and not Republicans.

I phrase it pretty much exactly as you put it, but the mystery of what unknown operation sourced all the dirt on Republicans is a scandal yet to be exposed.

Matt Gaetz, I believe, was questioned about contempt or impeachment for Rosenstein.

He said he thinks that it won’t happen because the leadership doesn’t want it...Ryan, McCarthy, Scalise...

In the meantime, they have injured Jim Jordan’s rise to the speakership with their slime attack.
