Suspect's 'guilty conscious' leads to confession of nearly 20-year-old double murder

'Perseverance paid off'

Georgia authorities arrested a man who confessed to a nearly two-decade-old double-homicide after his "guilty conscious" got the best of him.

Police arrested Andrew John Shadrix on Wednesday after he confessed to the drug-related murders of two men whose bodies were found in the trunk of a burning vehicle in September 2002 in Paulding County, officials said.

"This is a case where perseverance paid off and a guilty conscience got the best of the suspect," Paulding County Sheriff Gary Gulledge said in a news release. "We are glad the Jackson and English families will now have closure knowing that their sons' murderer is in custody."

Andrew English and Dennis Jeffrey Jackson were 21 and 19, respectively at the time of their deaths. Investigators reopened the cold case last year.

Shadrix, who was already incarcerated in the Georgia State Prison system on unrelated charges, confessed to the murders while appearing for court proceedings in Paulding County.

The murders took place in a Douglasville home that is no longer standing.

"It must be noted that this residence is no longer intact and was destroyed many years ago by the property owner for unrelated reasons," according to Gulledge.

The 44-year-old suspect is charged with two counts of malice murder. He's being held in the Paulding County Jail without bond.

The investigation is ongoing and more charges are expected, officials said.
