May is brain tumor awareness month and Fox Carolina anchor Tori Carmen shared her story about her brain tumor with viewers of the Greenville, S.C. Fox affiliate.

In an interview with fellow anchor Kari Beal, Carmen spoke about undergoing treatment and talked about what happened after she suffered a grand mal seizure at the end of February.

Carmen said she discovered she had a brain tumor after a week of not feeling very well.

“I had a lingering headache and a fever that spiked at night for a few days. It wasn’t the flu or covid, that’s when the seizure happened,” she posted on social media at the time. “Thankfully, I was at home with my fiancé, Jeremy. The seizure caused violent muscle contractions in my lower body and I lost consciousness. It was the scariest moment of my life. I thought I was dying… but Jeremy knew exactly what to do. EMS arrived and got me to the hospital soon afterwards.”

She said it was then doctors discovered she had a tumor, she called a “lump” in her brain.

Carmen said she recently had surgery to remove the tumor and told viewers she is healing. She also said that going through something like that is a struggle and it helps to have people to lean on.

“It’s still hard to find the words to explain the emotions surrounding the reality,” she said. “I’ve learned so much in a short time; listen to your body, advocate for yourself & ask questions. You can be ‘healthy’ and still be battling something deeply rooted.”
