Miriam chatted with fellow contestant Uche to see if they were compatible, and while Uche was asking questions about what she did for a living, things got a little confusing.
Miriam told Uche that she planned on studying medicine at first. So, he asked her what she ended up studying instead. She replied:
And of course he had a follow-up question:
With a slight hesitation, Miriam replied, "Um, I've worked in different industries." She confirmed that she currently works in academia overseas, in the Middle East.
A little shocked that she currently works overseas, Uche questioned when she planned on moving back, and the conversation continued on like this:
After watching the scene, many viewers were left feeling a little baffled:
So Miriam moved to the states alone but has family here. She’s a scientist who teaches in the Middle East and is planning to move back in two weeks but has also already moved back. And shes gonna study skin care but it’s not dermatology…a NIGERIAN TO HER CORE!! #loveisblind
why does miriam answer every question in such an evasive way? that conversation with her and uche was so weird, like she was being so elusive? #LoveIsBlindS5#LoveIsBlind
Miriam describing what she does has me thinking she’s in the bleaching of the skin business…. Hmmmmm…. Is she as a BLACK women selling skin bleaching products to other BLACK people….. #LoveIsBlind#loveisblind5pic.twitter.com/8KAUJUr3LV

Well, after noticing people were having trouble figuring out her place of residence and what her chosen career path is, Miriam decided to clear the air with an explanation video. According to her, that scene was heavily “chopped and screwed” by the production team.
In the video, Miriam revealed that she really is a scientist — an analytical chemist, to be exact. She has a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Houston Downtown and a master's degree in biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University.
She started off working in the oil and gas industry before pivoting to pharmaceuticals. She worked overseas as a subject-matter expert at a research institution, which is why she referred to it as "academia" on the show.
She added that she was just getting started with building her brand when filming began for the show, so she was still trying to figure things out...hence her getting tongue-tied.
