Ive found myself in a position where I am teaching kids (under 16) Muay Thai at my gym. I've got plenty of experience teaching, and the classes are running nicely.

A lot of my students have come from other martial arts, karate, judo etc and are asking me about being graded in Muay Thai.

I've never graded myself, despite training for a long time, with several long stints in thailand, and I am completely lost with this.

I can see the benefits of a grading system, for retention, and their sense of progress.

Has anyone got any experience with setting up/adopting/using a grading system for Muay Thai? If so, how does yours work?

Thanks

I don't yet, I'm 3 months in, and I'm still putting it together.

Maybe recommend or sign them up for events that do grading. This will give them experience and develop their style and they grade what they do. It's not full contact and wear full gear.

start with that. Once you have a curriculum it will be a lot easier to figure out a ranking system based on expectations and ability

To be honest a great curriculum blueprint you should check out is the Bang Muay Thai System for Ideas.

Sure it is a lot of marketing but the curriculum and structure is actually awesome. Under one of the BMT networks in Texas.

The grading system has two levels…

1. You cannot fight
2. You can fight

if you’re feeling jiggy….add in

3. You can fight better!

you need a curriculum or standards to hit
than you can make a grading system.
would be a great way to hit on the single mothers too

Dude you have been to Thailand where I currently live (Pattaya) you know there is no grading system as one poster said it's you can fight you can't fight that is it.

But the kids in Thailand aren't doing Muay Thai for confidence and bully management. They aren't doing it as rehab from video games. They are doing it to make money for adults. They let little kids fight a lot. It is kinda fucked up. Thai fighters are basically the second to last people on earth I'm going to for advice on how to bring up kids, right behind the fucking Gracies.

There are a lot of Muay Thai systems with ranking out there. You might be able to see how Greg Jackson does it for MMA, or Dan Inosanto has one.

Honestly you sound kinda soft.

Doesn't Brazil have kickboxing / Muay thai belt ranking ?

Boxing kickboxing muay thai generally don't use belts and ranks.

Kids in Thailand aren’t doing it for confidence and sports ?
Sure, they do. You sound like your experience of MT in Thailand is based off some dude from Isaan holding pads for you in some tourist soft spot (not that there’s anything wrong with that).
A lot of upper class Thai kids do MT in upscale places and they don’t do any grading or anything.

Dan Inosanto does grading ? That huckster who’s made a living off Bruce Lee’s name ? Cmon man. Just say it like it is. You wanna make some money peddling a McDojo version of MT. Ain’t nothing wrong with it but be honest.
You don’t have to, you want to. There’s a difference.

Muay Thai is child abuse.

Having a belt system doesn't make you a McDojo.

I gave two examples. Greg Jackson and Dan Inosanto. I don't care anything about either of them.

I'm not the TS

I don't teach.

I thought I was answering TS but yeah, beltifying in itself doesn’t make a McDojo but it is Muay Thai with McDojo characteristics.

Also if you’re not in charge of the overall MT program at the gym even if you are make sure to talk with the program manager or the owners.

they may not want a rank system

Mcdojo marketing and gym management techniques combined with sound Muay Thai training is a winning combination. It allows you to share Muaythai with as many people as possible while paying your coaches a living wage.

From one point I agree that gradig is unnecessary. From another point no.
I'm not sure what part for KB or MT might be better.

well, for the same KB or MT my area does not have respect about belts.
Some KB rule sets allows low kiks with 100% force while long clinch game is limited.
Euro KB hates long clinch game in general.
