This one just popped up on my feed, so I figured what the hell, been a few since I reminisced the early UFC days and some of those pioneer warriors.

Holy, sh*t, I forgot how gnarly those early days were. How unrefined and one-dimensional most of the combatants were. The amount of blood spilled, and the endurance of the multi-match set up required to be champ back then.

Dan Severn looking back, was truly as his nickname suggested - A friggin BEAST.

No standup striking technique, but able to take strikes to get ahold of you, and when he did, he was a human meat grinding machine. Strong as hell with great wrestling, GnP and choke fundamentals.

His stamina and grind would be impressive even in this era, and particularly considering he was a heavyweight. Guy was a machine!

Dan, now 64 years of age, was one of the true pioneers of the sport, and went on to amass an incredible 101 wins, 19 losses record over the years. Hope you enjoy this throwback as much as I did...

The GOAT. None of these HWs like Stipe or Francis have anywhere near the accomplishments on Severn. His skill level is on another planet. Imagine these dreadful UFC HW's today taking like 7 or 8 flush punches in over 120 fights, while making their MMA debut at 34 years old after thousands upon thousands of wrestling matches all over the world

It's so easy to forget with each new era of fighters. But some of these early guys were cut from that old school cloth of tougher than nails, gladiator warrior spirits.

Severn never even slowed down. He kept a smothering, smashing pace from start to finish, and in multiple fights on the SAME night. Sheesh.

Very true and the new era HW's don't have the same skill or talent level either. Severn would clown them badly. They would just turtle up on the floor and won't know what to do

I saw him fight twice live, once against Forrest Griffin and the other time against some good prospect from American Top Team... and Dan just beat the snot out of them, he is a master grappler and knows thousands of holds. Its a shame to see the new HW's how bad they are on the ground and clueless and the Russians dominating them.. when guys like Dan never ever lost to a Russian in MMA or wrestling, he took them all too school.

He was a big hero in Turkey and Russia and Hungary, taught them all how to wrestle properly. Some of his wrestling bouts in Turkey are legendary.

I love Dan, worked out with multiple times and he gave me some solid wrestling tips, even had his home phone in the early 2000s, but we cannot forget this when discussing how he would do against modern fighters ...

Right, because every modern fighter kicks as hard as the GOAT low kicker in MMA history.

Apparently the UFC turned him down a good few times as wrestling wasn't deemed a Martial Art, but the big man was persistent and kept asking for a fight.

Also much love to the way he carried himself outside the cage, and to think we may have never witnessed his incredible MMA career if he had never blown out his knee in his wrestling career.

Sure.
But The Beast is not that good of a nickname, and actually Severn didnt like it

He beat "modern" UFC champ Forrest Griffin though. And way aged, gave Barnett a competitive fight

Ngannou by KO in 45 seconds

Fair enough, but the problem was Dan never learned to defend leg kicks. He even admitted this later on.

He would have damn near 50 lbs on Griffin and Barnett only had 9 fights at that point. You raise good points but context matters.

Sure, but like you said, context matters. There's Pedro Rizzo and then there's everyone else. Do you think that Gane would send Dan packing with only two kicks? Everyone who has ever competed in MMA this side of Rizzo, Cro Cop, and maybe Hardonk, Severn could take a bunch of their low kicks in the course of trying to score a TD. Just because Rizzo kicked his leg apart in two seconds doesn't mean that that's what every fight would look like if prime Beast was time machined into the Octagon in 2023. Hell, I'd put money on UFC 5 Severn mauling 2023 Gane. And this is to say nothing of what it'd be like if Severn was coming up today, in which case he'd obviously learn low kick defense in addition to everything else that makes up contemporary MMA training.

Forrest regularly got as high as 240-250 before cutting down to 205. He is possibly the biggest LHW to ever compete in that division in the UFC. If he didn't cut, he might actually weigh the same as Severn. And Barnett took the UFC HW belt from Randy just a few fights after beating Severn.
