Islam Makhachev, now 24-1, sits at the summit and scans the horizon, a man without peer at 155 pounds—at least for now.

The 31-year-old Khabib Nurmagomedov protégé and current Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight titleholder has rattled off 12 consecutive wins and established himself as one of the top pound-for-pound competitors in the sport. While threats abound in one of MMA’s deepest and most tradition-rich weight classes, Makhachev appears poised for an extended run at the top. He has delivered 15 of his 24 career victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission, nine of them inside one round.

As Makhachev awaits word from UFC matchmakers on his next assignment, a look at some of the rivalries that have played a role in his rise to power:

Adriano Martins

The American Top Team product sniped Islam Makhachev with a magnificent counter right hook in the first round of their UFC 192 lightweight prelim on Oct. 3, 2015 at the Toyota Center in Houston. Martins brought it to a close 1:46 into Round 1. The previously unbeaten Makhachev marched forward with clubbing rights and lefts, paying little attention to defensive details; and the devil was indeed there. Martins slipped out of reach and connected with a check right hook that folded the hyped Dagestani prospect where he stood. The former Jungle Fight champion landed one final right hand for good measure on the dazed Makhachev before referee Frank Collazo could intervene. It remains the only blemish on an otherwise pristine resume.

Islam is such a beast
I was just rewatching how Charles defeated Poirier and Gathje, both elite LW monsters
Then watched Islam submit the guy with the most submissions record
Also feel he doesn't get enough credit for beating Volk just because it was a close fight against a smaller fighter

Islam bless

Submitting a guy after a knockdown... What a monster...

Myb dustin and gaethje suck on the ground just myb?

Submitting Charles olives isn’t impressive at all I mean lamas, cowboy and pettis have done it too
The version of Charles that beat Dustin and Gaethje is much better than earlier in his career as you mentioned.

Like levels and levels above, world class champion MMA fighter level.

That's why Islam's win over him is much more impressive than those fighters you mentioned Charles lost to like 6-10 years ago.

Do you actually watch the fights? Or do you just look at wikipedia and talk shit on the internet?

Yeah and there was nothing great about Khabib submitting Conor because Joe Duffy did it a lot faster, big deal!

"Makhachev appears poised for an extended run at the top."

I think he's great but I see his run only lasting at most 3 more fights. Before he wins the 4th title fight from here he will lose.

It is impressive, but I would say it would be much better (or even legit) if he could do when Charles was conscious... Charles gets a knockdown and then Islam transforms into the submission master? That's my point. Islam fanatics are dishonest af, no news. Logics are not their strongest assets.

Yeah islam fans are over the top (most fans are) but he did submit Charles. Was the sub less impressive or more impressive than subbing a fresh in position and aware Charles? Of course not but it was still a solid submission finish of a guy who at all levels of consciousness is a great sun artist
