The Young Folks Do Journalism

For years, the Classic had focused on the regular beats of a high school newspaper — — teacher retirements, curriculum changes, bell schedule. It was not an investigative outlet. But with Jahoda's appointment, the very nature of the school appeared to be imperiled, and the paper's staff decided it was time to step in.

a perfect story for the classic cliché: "And they would have gotten away with it, if not for those meddling kids."

It's weird that the Voice article is all about these students' reporting, but doesn't actually link to any of it. You can read the Classic here.

Sorry....I keep seeing references to the DOE and wondering what the hell the US Department of Energy is doing interfering in a public high school in New York, but I figure, with this administration, anything is possible.

jamjam I just read through half of those links and I'm enthralled. This will be a movie in ten years.

Why on earth is anyone supporting her still?

Have the students investigated yet whether there's a forbidden forest full of centaurs in which to leave her anywhere nearby? Asking for a friend.

When I was in law school I interned at the Student Press Law Center (the sibling of the Reporter's Committee for Freedom of the Press), and spent my summer helping high school and college kids like this fight their administrations and do "real journalism." It was great fun and they were always great kids. I hope these kids have the SPLC on speed dial!

Also as part of that job I read a lot of high school newspapers; it's easy to tell from the articles that these kids are doing some high-quality work. (I'm also kind-of impressed by how many teachers they're able to get to go on the record!)

Fun fact, the Student Press Law Center got online well before the Southern Poverty Law Center, so the kid journalists have "splc.org" and the lawyers are stuck with "splcenter.org," and we used to get a lot of their misdirected e-mail.)

Jamjam, you did the investigative linkery that I should have done in my fpp and this thread is the richer for it.

Why on earth is anyone supporting her still?

That's a really good question, showbiz_liz; you'd expect even the best of friends in high places to have an instinct for self-preservation that would have kicked in by now.

It suggests a runaway administration.

I hope to work for these kids someday.

Thank you very much, Hypatia!

I just happened to have read everything I could find about this a couple of weeks ago, and I was excited to see it here.

I was really, really hoping I wouldn't step on your toes by dumping those links, and I am grateful to be reassured about that.
