That's awesome, but I'd still hate to try to stop from top speed near the edge of a lake. Even with those breaks.

I caught the more traditional ice canoe race in Quebec City a few weeks ago. These ice dragon boats look good for solid ice, but on something like the St Lawrence you need to be able to deal with frigid open water AND making across the ice flows.

Or let go of one on the way down to the ice...although that looks kinda fun.

It's 8C in Ottawa right now.

That looks super-fun. I see that Ottawa's sold out in 10 minutes, not surprised.

The videos all show the class racing - everyone's got the same boat. Is there a design-your-own-boat event?

This looks super super dumb, and also awesome. I want to go. Alas, I haven't been back to Ottawa for Winterlude since 2005ish and keep moving farther and farther away.

I live in Ottawa and haven't taken advantage of Winterlude in years; I'm not really a winter person. This allllllllmost is enough to make me go again.

... across the ice flows.

I'm not normally one to be picky about spelling, but floe is too cool a word to deserve being confused with flow.

I'm not sure if the Rideau canal ice technically counts as a floe, or not. It is floating, as demonstrated one time a few decades ago when it sprang a leak and started to sink under the mass of people skating on it. When the ice seems well thick enough to be unbreakable and you don't know why it's not open already, that's probably why.

A friend of mine was in this race! Definitely fun!

Sad that the boats are not made out of ice. :(
