/what discount coffee may look like

You don't ask for free coffee, you just let them give it to you if they want.

I've gotten a free coffee a few times just because I was wearing a T-shirt I bought to help out the local firehouse cancer charity.

I even let her give me one after she said, "Oh sorry, your coffee is free," pointing at the emblem on my shirt.

Being a cool skater kid in the 80s, many of us donned old uniform shirts (kind of like the trucker hat thing that happened... whenever that happened).

I had a mail man's shirt and would ride the bus for free, I thought that was BALLER.

If you're impersonating a cop to get discounted coffee at 11pm on a Friday night :

1. You're doing it wrong.
2. You're a LOSER

WIVB-TV reports that Mark Stetter, 48,

That's typical of these people.  Why won't their leaders speak out about this?

He was probably wearing BRAND NEW Air Jordans and talking on his Obamaphone.  And what's with the name these people give their kids?  "Mark".  I heard from a guy at work that these people just open a bible and pick the first name they see.

Police in western New York have charged a man who they say impersonated a police officer in an attempt to get discounted coffee.

Well that was his obvious mistake right there.  Real cops demand free coffee.

So, in an effort to save himself a couple of bucks, he impersonated a cop.  An offense that is going to cost him many $10k's.  And he'll be lucky to get off with just probation.

What. An. Idiot.

Also, Starbucks coffee sucks.  Which makes him an even bigger fool.

It was funny. I am really happy you don't see why. Can't imagine being so short-changed in life as you are. I've no pity.

What kind of name is "Mark" any way?  It means 'to write a word or symbol on something'.  Are his brothers named Stain and Smudge?

whatshisname: Does Starbucks have a discount program for police officers?

Though likely not official company-wide policy, many stores do offer discounts to uniformed public safety and military.  There are 4-5 in the city I work in who refuse to charge us for coffee.  I generally grab a piece of banana bread or a muffin if they're giving me free coffee since they can't give that stuff away free.  That or i'll throw a few bucks in the tip jar.

We've got a policy against asking for free or discounted stuff.

Free, to uniformed officers.

In my experience, cops don't demand free coffee, they just refuse to pay.

Well, yeah.  When I was doing restaurant work, we were instructed to give the cops whatever they ordered "because they provide protection", you see.  And mark everything down on a sheet where it could be deducted from taxes as "promotional" expenses.

A rectangular ID of any purpose, on a lanyard (just nonchalantly hanging around your neck)  is usually enough to get into various functions - as long as you both time it right and seem confidant+annoyed.

The impersonation charge may not be as cut and dry as it seems, because he wasn't asking the coffee shop to submit to his authority (one of the requirements for impersonation under NY law).   and I doubt asking for a discount that you're not entitled to count as a felony (an alternative requirement for impersonation in NY State)
