You know, it's been a rough day in America. It seems like everything is falling apart and everyone is scared, angry and depressed. But I think we can all agree, regardless of our politics, that Dave Barry is the most singularly unfunny person in U.S. history and his continued syndication in our nation's newspapers must be due to a satanic pact.

I'm pretty sure it was you in another thread who claimed that Hey Jude by the Beatles was satanic because it had 216 (6x6x6) "NA's" at the end.

davidphogan: I am surprised.

From that site: Beverly Cleary, Herman Wouk, and Monty Hall are also still alive.

It's close, but I think that award goes to Garrison Keillor.

He used to crack me up when I was a kid. I read through his new stuff pretty much only when it randomly pops up on fark, and I don't he's come close to making me laugh out loud. I like to believe that his old stuff really was funnier, but I'm not sure I want to re-read it and check. My favorite bit I can vaguely remember involved a made up British expression "Whomp come a black thing down bigger than the stone on a cheese press." Maybe its a sort of youthful anarchic silliness that's missing from his recent efforts.

I've always liked Dave Barry, but he's 70 years old now and his fastball doesn't have the zip it once did.

Maybe it's nostalgia, but I think he was funnier in the 90s.

But did he change, as the producer of content? Or did we change, as the consumers? Both, probably.

He used to be really funny to me.  I think the problem is that whatever "it" is that makes something funny to me has changed a bit over time and Dave Barry hasn't.  He doesn't give me the big laughs like he use to but when I read his stuff I find it comfortably amusing.

He's a lot like Letterman. Humor has the same "edge" that was once uncommon and new, but now has been so subsumed into all comedy that it's no longer noteworthy. His wordplay used to be surprising (and therefore funny) but again, it's been done for so long that it isn't a surprise anymore.

Judging by the number of eastbound commuters who are shocked and completely unprepared to drive into the morning sun each day, I'm guessing this eclipse will usher in chaos the likes of which we've never seen.
