Producers: Here you go, China - a big dumb confusing CGI mess...swap out the english with your own language. In fact, swap out the story with whatever makes sense to your own people, since we film these deliberately without any context.

China: Thank you. Opium for the (dumb) masses!

I can't even remember how many of them I watched.  At least two, I think maybe three.

You probably saw the one where robots are fighting in a CGI mess where you can't tell who is on whose side and the girl is hot and the dude stares blankly like an idiot.

I think that was the last one I saw yah, it had a lot of pro-americana type moments too right?  Also in that one they threw in some useless characters that were bluntly 'urban' to meet some demographic appeal too if I remember correctly.

this isn't surprising at all.  This series is mainly made for China in the first place.  They know they're gonna flop stateside, but that's okay, because that's actually the secondary market for this kind of movie.

I tried to watch one of them with my kid, who must have been 8 at the time....it was terrible.   Could not hold my attention or his and coupled with the profanity I turned it off.  I think we saw about 20 minutes and I never want to see any more.  Awful.

I only saw the first one but that pretty much sums it up.  It was quite entertaining up to the last 20 minutes after which I have no idea at all what happened.  I made a general assumption the rest would be stupid.

Yeah it's big in china till those people who saw and bootlegged it the first weekend start selling the copies with rendered subtitles.

Then how about we just skip the domestic release of the Bayformer movies and send them straight to China, and meanwhile reboot the Transformers franchise in a way that is actually designed for American audiences?

It doesn't even seem like they advertised this one.... I saw the trailer before a theatrical film, and also online because i sought it out, but i did not just randomly catch the trailer during normal TV viewing.  Its like they thought the audience was built in, why advertise it.... but i'm kinda with it, in terms of film and did not even know they were releasing it last weekend.

Sadly, I too, believed that the third movie would be better than the second thanks to Bay's assurances. (he blamed the second film on the writer's strike, I think) I didn't see it in the theatre, but I was duped into watching it.
Bay used to have fun movies e.g. The Rock, Armageddon. But I would say his quality has dropped substantially since then (nearly 20 years ago!).

Its the same reason why foreign films are a niche market here. Nuances of culture, language, pacing, you name it, give a particular nations' cinema a flavor that uniquely their own. Many of today's movies are being intentionally made without these idiosyncrasies so as to be more understandable to foreign audiences.  Instead of a well-crafted story with character progression, reliable pacing and internal consistency, we are getting a jumble of similar robots beating each other up for no really coherent reason at all. Correction; we aren't getting it, Chinese audiences are getting it and we have to suffer through it because the movie was profitable (but not memorable) in the end.

I read somewhere that with each new movie in this franchise the percent of revenue from the US has decreased.

I was really bored Friday so I went to see it. I had very low expectations so I didn't hate it. Didn't think that it was great either.

The film accounted for approximately 70 percent of all showtimes in China throughout the weekend...

Wow. I wonder how many other movies were playing at Chinese movie theaters. I wouldn't be surprised if the studios have deals with movie theaters to squeeze out competition.

Was that the one with the funny sidekick robots who show up periodically through the movie and do the wacky thing?

Or is it the one with the  funny sidekick people who make stupid exaggerated facial expressions for a few minutes about half way through the movie, but it turns out they have literally no reason to be in the movie?

It turns out that with just small changes to the dialogue and accents when you dub the movie into another language, they could stand in for literally any ethnic group you might want to either mock, or appeal to, depending on the decisions of the marketing department.

Did it have the slow motion pan across a huge American flag with helicopters/jets/whatever flying over and the main character watches them fly over in awe?

They do.  That's the big reason the government only allows a very limited number of US films to release in China.  If they didn't, nobody in their right mind would pay to watch a Mainland Chinese film.
