The head line says "gold-plated", the article says "solid gold".

If the article is more accurate than the headline, the 33 pounds is probably in Troy pounds, which is a small fraction of a standard pound.  So, if that mask is 33 Troy pounds that might be about its value.  If it is solid 24-Karat gold.

Either way, it's the wrong color, so I'm not buying it.

Maybe it is gold plated solid gold.

Why are they asking twice what you could buy 33 pounds of gold for? Is Donny a Vader fan?

They're intending to rip off some wealthy fan who started a tech company aren't they.

33 troy pounds is just 396 troy ounces.  With Spot gold at 1264.71 as I type, that would make it worth worth just $500,825.

Even if they're Avoirdupois pounds (approx 20% heavier) the damned thing is still worth only around $600k.

Given the headline and the story can't even get their facts straight, I'm calling BS on the entire thing.  Nobody charges $900k to cast a darth vader mask from paid-for raw materials.

Here is the original storyThe made-up price is BS.

"The helmet, with a value "too high for anyone to buy," was made in collaboration with Disney and will go on to join the producer's collection."

So apparently it's not for sale, someone made up the price in the follow-up stories.

A Japanese guy wrote the article, and then it was translated into English. A native speaker of Japanese would need to have the pun explained. It's probably included in the translation because translators strive for completeness.

Gold-plated means a thin layer of gold is added to base metal or perhaps silver, sometimes by hammering, often by electrolytic plating.

Gold plate is often solid gold, as is silver plate. Plate in this usage is closer to plate as the name for a dish rather than a process. Gold plate is largely used on the tables of the very, very rich and aristocratic or royal.

The article confuses the two terms perhaps. Or it is simply sloppy.

There is no way merely gold-plated anything would be worth that price unless it were a genuine work of art.

33 pounds Troy of gold, on the other hand, would be 33 x 12 = 396 ounces of gold, almost a 400 ounce gold bar's worth. At current prices for an ounce Troy of pure gold, the mark-up on the gold content would still be high, but it's your money. Pay what you think it is worth. Art gold is way more expensive than bulliion but does not hold its value.

Personally I regard the market for gold coins with WB characters or glass "jewels" and other tacky-tat on them shows that the rich are getting stupider and more vulgar along with the poor and middle classes.

You couldn't sell me a two pound coin with Taz the Tasmanian Devil on it at a major discount on the gold content. Embarrassingly tacky and nouveau.

I saw a rapper on Desus & Mero  (VICE network, NYC) who was wearing a solid gold copy of Nike, the Goddess of Victory, a famous headless statue. It contained half a kilogram of gold. I don't recall the cost but it was definitely over $500,000 and less than $1.2 million.

Better.

Still a bit too bling-bling, but at least the Nike is a great work of art. The original is priceless. If you want it  copied in gold rather than life-sized in marble or bronze, that is your business.

Think of all the fathers who abandon their kids for booze or ciggies. In a certiain couche sociale, it is usual for the women to do much of the work and provide most or all of the child care and child support. Among white people, there are hill billies and jailbirds. Among respectable black professional and business families, not to mention the clergy, this is rare.

Race does not absolutely determine culture. Indeed, the rule is that genes are not destiny. Even bad genes can be fought or worked around. Mental and physical disabilities can be overcome, and race is a whole lot more shaky and arbitrary a social construct than genes are.

The Hello Kitty really sells the pastel armour. I bet you that he or she has a Helly Kitty gun to match the uniform. So if you see this guy, don't point and laugh. He may be armed and dangerous. Whimsically armed and dangerous, like a man with katana.

Let's be honest. Aren't light sabres a little bit gay to start with? Why would anybody who has lasers or masers use a damned sword with a limited range? You would be better off fighting in eye-glasses, with one hand voluntarily tied behind your back.
