The only open wifi in my neighborhood is somebody's Xfinity wifi. Isn't that their (Xfinity) open network, so they can hotspot everybody's house?

Kalyco Jack: OFFS Who doesn't password protect their wifi?!

Most restaurants for one.  People can get open wifi in most places they go without passwords.  My phones and tablets switch open networks depending on signal strength settings I choose.  I had to turn off the 'open wifi ping' sound since it happens so much.

When someone has problems with getting their friends to be able to connect to their wifi and they ask for help, someone will pass on the 'oh, turn on the guest network so passwords aren't needed' tip that works well for businesses but not so well for home situations.

I wanted to beat that character to death with a rock, and told the gf at the time as much as we left the theater. My anger was ... I was very angry. She then explained (because she was smarter than me) that he actually represents the average viewer of the movie. Someone who has not seen combat and who shuts down when someone else is committing an act of violence near them.

I thought about all the times that people get herd mentality and do just that, ignore cries for help or simply watch (record, these days) someone being attacked, and realized she was right, and that I also did not know at the time how I would have reacted in that situation.

Still want to kill the guy, which shows what a good job the actor did.

The open hotspot on Comcast's modems is separate from the password-wifi you use with your own devices.

My first modem was a clunky 300 baud on my old commodore 64...just short of a cradle, this thing was a "state of the art" upgrade that used a switch.  Had to listen for the tone, then flip the switch on the back of the modem.

Optimum has hotspots like that, I suspect that they actually use their customers routers, that is they have a WiFi router built into the customers cable modems, to send their WiFi signals with a signal that's about 1-10mbs.

He wasn't actually being serious. The problems are that it sometimes won't connect at all, or if it does, won't pass any traffic, but when it does work you get all the megabits the customer isn't using at the time. I suppose it's better than nothing.
