I know a guy that retired there back in the late 90s because he had no pension but some savings.

Now I see those HGTV shows where people are buying little houses for $350K. I think I missed the boat.

Of course "the rest of your life" is likely to be only a few years before you're killed in a botched robbery or by the substandard health care system.

It's probably the most relaxing place on Earth. Nobody keeps track of time, most locations don't have addresses, no military, and a huge conservation and eco-tourism industry. I've heard the education and healthcare is great.

However, don't plan on relocating there unless you have a big savings account or pension, you won't be able to make any money. It's very hard for a pensionado to get a job (they're  mainly reserved for the Ticos). Unless you're lucky enough to work for a global corporation that can transfer you there, or other misc work from home businesses.

If you're a foodie, you'll be sorely disappointed. And then there are the BOT FLIES, which are fine unless you have a problem with large larvae growing and moving around under your skin until they emerge and fly away some day.

I know a guy who built a vacation home there. The bandits drive around and throw rocks on the rooftops of the wealthier houses. If the lights don't go on after a few passes, they invite themselves in. He pays someone to live there.

FTA: "Happiness is calculated by measuring a country's bliss in relation to the wellbeing, life expectancy and social inequality, and then dividing it by its ecological footprint"

That's amusing math right there.

Went there in 2015. It was very interesting. Not sure about living there permanently. The food is pretty bland and limited. Most houses are fenced in like prisons. The people were very nice and the scenery amazing.

The cloud forest in Monteverde is definitely a must see. They have hanging bridges so you can walk above the forest. Also did a zip line across that was so cool. Here are a few photos from the cloud forest. The bridges can be quite scary. As you walk along they bounce. This bridge at 31 meters is about 101 feet above the ground.
