Even Fox News Talking Heads Were Outraged by Donald Trump’s Defense of White Supremacists

So, what now?

Fox News has decidedly been in the water-carrying business when it comes to Donald Trump, but that may be beginning to change. Yesterday President Trump was supposed to walk out before the press and talk about infrastructure. Instead, he ranted and raved about how unfair the media was, and that there were good people and bad people on both sides of the Charlottesville conflict. Now, on one side there was a group of literal Nazis—angry white supremacists who, the night before, had carried torches and chanted things like "Jews will not replace us" and the Nazi slogan "blood and soil," and whose rhetoric led to a terrorist attack that killed one person and injured others. On the other, you had people who were...against fascism and racism and got in fights with violent Nazis.

And the president of the United States, after finally going after white supremacists on Monday, decided to backslide to his terrible "both sides" weekend statement. And why? Because that sure seems to be what he really believes, and he's an arrogant narcissist who doesn't want to acknowledge that he could be wrong and thinks his base will support him no matter what.

One thing that I can't imagine he thought? That Fox News would begin to turn on him for these racist and horrifying defenses of Nazis. And yet here we are.

First, before Trump had even reversed course again, Eboni K. Williams took to Fox's airwaves to attack Trump's racist rhetoric.

But it turned out that was just the appetizer, because after the press conference Williams's co-host Kat Timpf joined the chorus, wondering if this is even real life.

And columnist Charles Krauthammer went on Fox News and said that Trump's statements were a "moral disgrace" and correctly pointed out that Monday's prepared statement was basically a "hostage tape" and Trump was saying things he didn't believe.

Now, this doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things if Fox & Friends and Hannity continue to pat the president's back and tell him that everything he's doing is great while accusing everyone who disagrees with him of being unfair. As long as that's happening, Trump will happily continue to believe that he's doing a great job. But it's still an important sign that he's losing the mainstream of the Republican Party. And he should be, because he got up there today and tried to claim that there were many good people marching alongside the white nationalist groups, which is such insane nonsense that it boggles the mind.

It's about time the GOP comes around and deals with the monster they helped create. This is a good first step, but until Paul Ryan and Marco Rubio are doing more to oppose Trump than issuing harshly worded statements, things are only going to keep getting worse.
