Is it because he doesn't want to take unecessary. Or maybe he does and is just naturally very bad at it.

Reason I ask is because there have been a couple of fights recently in particular where the person who is supposed to grapple ends up out striking the striker. Simply because the striker is terrified to throw incase he is taken down.

I think if maia learned to strike properly or at least carry a threat of sorts he would be even more formidable in the division.

Just imagine a maia with a ko threat.<JonesLaugh>

He probably does and thats why he doesnt
Cuz he knows hes gonna get destroyed

Jacare is essentially Maia with KO power but Maia BJJ is just a little better adapted to MMA.

It brings back memories of this:

He tried to for a while there, and this happened...

Doesn't Maia train striking with Rafael Cordeiro? I think he just doesn't have an aptitude for it and no one has an answer for his back mount.

That's a really good point I never thought about jacare.

Maia''s bjj is much better than jacare though in general as you say. If that was maia who had hold of whittaker he ain't getting away so easy to go on and ko him.

He did.

It didn't work out as nearly as beneficial to developing his wrestling further. So he switched from working on striking to more wrestling.

His striking has improved over the year actually. Still sucks though.

Some people hit a point where they just can't get better anymore and plateau because of athletic abilities or whatever else it might be. Look at Jake Shields.

Did you not see him about 5 or so years ago? He abandoned his ground game for striking and it was stupid as shit.

He has the athleticism/power of a baby seal. Hes man enough/smart enough to know hes never going to outstrike a top 10 fighter, so why not just hone in that fucking master level grappling and dominate? Working pretty damn well for him, and honestly its nice to still see a specialist/single TMA type fighter in this era of mma.

Maia has worked on his striking a bit.

He started to use his striking to set up his grappling attacks in some of his more recent fights.

Unfortunately for him there are some serious power houses out there that he does not want to exchange with so he doesn't invest in striking as his main goal. I don't think he should either. It's better for him to tie them up and drag them down over being picked apart or bombed.

Maia is a bit better with his striking now than he was several years ago, but he won't ever become a competent or comfortable striker.

Age is a big factor for any fighter to overcome when trying to adopt other skills. It is much easier to pick up multiple disciplines when you are younger rather than older. Reflex based skills are very hard to develop later in life.

You don't need strikes to win a mma match, so why waste time on strikes?

Take a guy down, keep him there. Win a fight without getting hit or hitting.

I'm not really talking abandon it. I'm talking just to push it out a bit more. Use strikes to create a respectable diversion so you can dive on that leg. Or crowd against the cage. Maybe even hurt the guy by accident lol.. a few people have said he does have good power.
