Always dropping out of fights with excuses about injury or something else now that he's fallen out of the title picture I've seen him right 3 times in a span of 7 months compared to when he was champion. Go figure

That belt is pretty heavy. Probably put extra pressure on his knees and joints when constantly walking around with it. That's probably why champions sit on the sidelines soon as they get the belt.

I was thinking the same thing too, something about being champion seems to make fighters a lot more injury prone..

It's like when I got my job, I did everything to make the boss happy and stuff, take on all shifts in order to rise a little bit. Now I just do the bare minimum to not get fired.

It's all about " getting there ". But, once you have. It's all about " staying there ".

Champs generally have an average of about 2 fights per year. Some may get in 3 within 12 months. But I think the overall average would be pretty close to 2.5 fights per year. Maybe a bit less than that.

And, now again. He is without the belt, and wants to get back in contention.

I just think it's bullshit because you should have that dedication even if you have the belt to prove your the top dog. Now all of a sudden he's healthy to take on these fights now because he's not on top shows that he was ducking as a champion

Everyone does that once they got the belt.
It makes sense to sit on it for as long as possible.
Look at Bisping; wins the belt, defends against someone who isn't even Top 10, begs to fight a retired WW who hasn't fought in years, then says he's injured and that other guys should fight each other.

Cody Garbrandt

Fight like 4 times last year wins the belt out 11 months

I don't know man maybe I'm old school. When you had guys like wanderlei Chuck Liddell fedor took on all competition and were very active as champions. This sport is slowly turning into boxing.

Weidman defended the strap 4 times in 2 years, all 4 against the top contender

Not exactly the champion activity of past eras but better than most recent champs

Wand was active but PRIDE was weird. He only defended the belt like 2-3 times in 11-12 fights. Same with Fedor and Gomi.

Pride had a lot of tournaments, then you had shit like Wand fighting Hunt lol

Chris Weidman & Cain Velasquez were champions forever and they made them seem like Anderson Silva type dominators in their promos.

"Chris Weidman/Cain Velasquez has been dominating the middleweight/heavyweight division for 2-3 years..."

It was shameless and disgusting considering that every MMA fan knew exactly why they were champions for so long lol

Chris Weidman is a bum. He beat up old washed up Brazilians, went on a 3 fight losing streak to good fighters in their prime, breaks his losing streak against a Welterweight he was dropped by in which he would've lost had there been at least 15 more sec. Pathetic

{<jimmies}

The only active champs are Mighty Mouse, Twood, and Joanna, everyone else right now doesnt defend sheeeeeet. DC 2 defenses in 2 years, Amanda 1 defense in 1 year, Cody/Dom 1 defense in 530 days, Conor hasnt defended 2 titles in 2 years, even Stipe has only defended 1 time per year since winning
