And get a blue after 1 year and a purple after 3.... is that still too fast ?

What? I mean overall it's more mat time than how long you've trained. I've trained on and off for 15 years, and there are people who've been training for four or five with more mat time and skills than me.

So no, it's not too fast. You're probably not Caio Terra or BJ, but getting purple in three years is palusible for sure.

Not unheard of, but even at 5 days a week, I think you would still have to pick it up faster than the average guy at most places.

I think it depends on how your class is set up. Mat time is the only thing that transfers practice to reality. If you train 5 hours a week during those 5 days it may not be enough. But if you train 15 hours a week it makes more sense. Don't burn out and don't get hurt

i got mine in about that time frame at about 2hrs a class, 5 days a week.

shit happens. why worry about too fast or too slow?? the belt doesnt change the reality on the mats every day.

Thanks guys. I ask because we recently had a purple belt promoted and he said he got blue in one year and purple in 3. The professor didn't make it seem like it's unusual at all and I'm trying to make sure I'm not at a Mc dojo and a legit school.

Yeah, whatever.

Go compete and find out if it was too fast.

Call out Gordon Ryan.

Be like, "B******TCHHH I GOT MY PURPLE IN THREE MONTHS"

I got my blue belt in around 1.5 years. However, I did compete quite regularly and got gold/silvers at local competitions.

If you can really do 5 days a week consistently..you will make pretty rapid progression.

our mestre was training twice a day in brasil for ten years to get his black belt, never seen him give a blue belt in less than two years, even with the guys training every day and competing all time.. it really depend of the gym I guess.

There was an Australian guy on here that went white to purple with no prior grappling experience (that he mentioned at least), in 2 years 7 months, training twice a week and he was legit. So clearly it varies.

It depends on the instructor. I've been training for years. I've seen this budddy of mine who deserve a belt upgrade get passed over due to some petty gym politics. I've seen dudes get their belt for the same reason. I try not to care about it so much anymore but sometimes when you see your friend continue to be over looked it gets frustrating. I'm not talking about just getting passed over once or twice. I'm talking about the head instructor calling someone specifically to tell them to be at the gym on a certain day for promotion day. The guy shows up and everyone else gets a promotion except him.

I know everyone is going to think "my friend" is me. I'm not sure I'm ready for a promotion yet. I don't even feel close to being ready for the next upgrade.

I don't know why martial arts can be so petty. Anyway I try not to care about promotions anymore. I'll take it when it's my time or I'll never take it.

Wow the instructor really did that? He didn't say come to support the team? Most of my school goes to belt promotions to support the people getting promoted. Maybe you misinterpreted? If not your instructor sounds like the opposite of what an instructor should sound like.

Just improve. I like being the crafty blue belt that taps purples and browns and gives blacks hell. But that's the standard at my academy. A multi year purple just transferred over from another academy. I have maybe ten pounds on him, so it's not lIke I'm just outmuscling him. The first time we rolled I caught him three times in seven minutes. And it's more or less the same every time, and our other old blue belts as well.
So it has a lot to do with the individual academy's standards.

He isn't my instructor anymore. Anyway, he didn't call everyone to come support the team. He called him specifically and told him to make sure and be there for promotion day. It's one thing to tell everyone to come and support your team. It's another to say you need to be there.

C'mon man, name and shame him! :)

... provided you are getting enough rest to recover. Otherwise this may really slow down the process.
