Underrated acting performances

What are some underrated / less talked great acting performances that you can recall?

There are plenty of great actors with well known roles, Ledger in Batman Dark Knight, Gary Oldman in True Romance, Adrien Brody in Pianists and so on...

But what about the lesser talked roles? Maybe some of those that flew under the radar for some reason or just from movies that not too many has seen.

I was super impressed by Sean Penn in Assassination of Richard Nixon. Decent movie, nothing great though in my opinion, but his role was near perfection. Great stuff and a positive surprise indeed

Other one that comes into my mind is Jake Gyllenhaal in both Nightcrawlers and Nocturnal Animals. I didnt care for him too much in the past when I saw him in movies but he has really turned my opinion around. Loved in Donnie Darko, although that was an older film, but I saw it only few years back for the first time. Fantastic movie by the way.

Those are couple of examples I can say. One more comes in to my mind, but its not very underrated, not at all actually, but gotta say it. Christopher Waltz in Django (and inglorious bastards as well of course). Man can he act. If you havent seen him for some reason, please do watch those movies.

Christopher W is freaking awesome. So I dont really think anybody sees him as underrated?

Jim Varney as Ernest in all those movies. The direction was always pretty bad, but the performance is phenomenal.
 
Funny you mention this. I'm watching this movie about Jim Morrison on Netflix. Holy fuck Val Kilmer was born to play this role.
 
jason isaacs as both Col Tavington in the Patriot and the elder Malfoy in the Harry Potters...

GOAT at playing detestable characters, even though he's nothing like that in interviews etc..

It's not, thats why I said that his performances werent really underrated, but wanted to give him a shout, maybe in case someone hasnt seen those movies because those really need to be seen. Great, great actor
 
Cant say its underrated, but I watched Philadelphia for the first time last night and was stunned by Hank's performance.
 
Jennifer Lawrence in Winters Bone...not really sure what kind of acclaim she got for it, but is my favorite film of hers. It was before the mockingbird movies and all the other bigtime Hollywood garbage she's been involved in since....had high hopes for her after this film and now I I see her name attached to a film and I make a point not too watch it.

Lol quite the opposite actually.

He was a big reason the film was praised and won n Oscar for his performance.

That is actually underrated... dude should win an Oscar for just being alive and awesome.
 
Diego Luna and Gabriel Garcia Bernal in ''Y tu Mama Tambien''.

Nicholas Cage in ''Adaptation''.

Daniel Day Lewis in ''Gangs of New York'' (I guess this is not really underrated as he was nominated for the oscar, but I feel this was Day Lewis best performance and he should have won it)

Tim Curry in pretty much everything. :D
