Koeman, who earlier in the window lost striker Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United for £75m, hailed the arrival of attacking midfielder Sigurdsson, who will become Everton’s most expensive player.

‘We worked a long time to get this deal in and he was one of the key players to bring in. We knew would lose Lukaku for this season and we need players who bring productivity to the team.

‘He is the type of player with a lot of productivity. In my opinion he is one of the best in the Premier League.’

Speaking ahead of the first leg of Everton’s Europa League play-off with Hajduk Split at Goodison Park on Thursday Koeman, who has been busy in the transfer market, added that he was not yet finished spending.

‘It’s not done,’ he said. ‘Everybody knows why. We are still we are looking in two positions to make the squad even stronger.’
