Arsenal 1-0 Leicester City, Premier League RESULT: Plus Tottenham beat Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough 1-0 Sunderland

  • Crystal Palace 0-1 Tottenham; Arsenal 1-0 Leicester, Boro 1-0 Sunderland
  • Nacho Monreal's deflected strike earns Arsenal vital three points
  • Christian Eriksen's long-range strike puts Spurs ahead in final 15 minutes
  • Wanyama taken off at half time after being fortunate to avoid a red card
  • Marten de Roon's early goal earns Middlesbrough derby win

North London's two sides both struck late to win 1-0 on their return to Premier League action on Wednesday night.

The Gunners needed a deflected Nacho Monreal strike to beat Leicester, while Tottenham's Christian Eriksen hit a blistering 25-yard strike to see his side past Crystal Palace.

At the bottom of the table Sunderland fell further adrift as Middlesbrough beat them 1-0 thanks to Marten de Roon's strike.

That's all folks

Three games. Three goals. Three very big results in three different parts of the table. Arsenal, Tottenham and Middlsebrough all had to work very hard for their wins, but, in the end, they each did enough.

There are reports on all three games already up on the site, plus comment and analysis on the way. Thanks for joining me, that's all for tonight!

Christian Eriksen celebrates with the Tottenham fans after his winning goal
Nacho Monreal is congratulated by his team-mates after his winner at the Emirates
21:54
FULL TIME: Crystal Palace 0-1 Tottenham

A big win for Tottenham, hard-fought but probably deserved in the end. Palace will point, angrily, to the lack of a red card for Wanyama, but Eriksen's strike was brilliant, and earns Mauricio Pochettino and his men the points.

21:53

What an odd passage of play. First Spurs, who have spent the last five minutes in the corner, decide to go for goal from an attack. Then Palace, who have spent the last 30 minutes punting the ball forward hopefully, start playing tiki taka in their own box.

When they do get it forward Spurs win it back and break, and Zaha is booked for a foul on Sissoko. That, I think, will be that.

21:52

Dele Alli is taken off to kill a bit more time. Seconds left, but can Palace create a chance?

21:51

There are four minutes of stoppage time to go, and Spurs are keeping the ball in the corner - which perhaps tells you how much they respect Palace. Sissoko wins another corner, which Eriksen takes a good 40 seconds to take. At which point Sissoko wins another corner. This is petering out...

21:49

93 mins: Eriksen has just been named man of the match - not surprising in a game so lacking in quality that the scorer should get that gong.

The only player who might feel aggrieved by that decision is Zaha, who has been superb - but Palace haven't really threatened since half time...

21:47
SEVEN MINUTES OF STOPPAGE TIME

The Sakho injury means we still have a long way to go in this one...

21:46

90 mins: As we enter stoppage time it's the Spurs fans in full voice, and their team are controlling the game. After a superb performance against Liverpool, this just looks like a game too many for Palace.

21:44
He's done it again...
Tottenham Hotspur's Christian Eriksen scores the opening goal with a brilliant effort...
...and the Spurs man celebrates a wonderful goal
21:40

83 mins: Still a fair way to go at Selhurst Park, because of that Sahko injury, but you can only see this going one way. Spurs look revitalised after the goal, and Palace look exhausted.

21:38
FULL TIME: Arsenal 1-0 Leicester

Arsenal's top-four ambitions live on. It wasn't pretty, it wasn't clever, but in they end they did enough. Leicester are now without a win in five games in all competitions. Will they get sucked back into a scrap?

21:38
FULL TIME: Middlesbrough 1-0 Sunderland

Three priceless points, and first Premier League win of the year for Boro. Can this start an unlikely escape?

Sunderland have lost yet more ground at the bottom of the table
21:37

95 mins: Utter carnage in the Arsenal box, with Schmeichel up for a set piece. I have no words to describe what just happened, but the Gunners, just, escaped. Into the sixth minute of stoppage time...

21:35
GOAL! Crystal Palace 0-1 Tottenham (Eriksen 78)

It's that man again! Eriksen's super run continues, a wonderstrike from 25 yards. To be fair, Hennessey shouldn't be beaten from there, but what a hit that is!

21:34

Well this is a lot of nonsense. Fuchs prepares to take a long throw, Sanchez stands right on top of him - probably too close. The Leicester man hurls the ball at the Chilean, who waits a moment, then collapses tot he floor.

Sanchez is booked for not retreating the required distance. Fucks is probably lucky to escape.

21:33
Into stoppage time

Into stoppage time in both the earlier games. Both home sides lead 1-0. Will we see late drama?

21:32

While their north London rivals have taken the lead, Spurs are still involved in a proper scrap at Selhurst Park.

Sissoko is very luck yo avoid a booking, and Palace are still giving as good as they get, matching Tottenham all over the pitch. 15 minutes to go, and all three results still very much on...

21:30

88 mins: Oh Arsenal, you temptress! Moments after taking the lead, the Gunners almsot chuck it away, Cech flapping at a cross, but getting away with it. Can they hold on?

They think they've done more than that, but Ozil's goal is disallowed, rightly, for offside.

21:27
GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Leicester (Monreal 86)

It's scrappy, but they all count. Arsenal were laying seige to the Leicester box, and finally it pays off, as Mesut Ozil's lay-off finds Nacho Monreal, who shoots from 20 yards. The shot is deflected, possibly of Olivier Giroud, and in it goes.

21:26
Frustration
Granit Xhaka shows his anger as a decision goes against him
21:26

Three games, and none of them look very likely to produce a goal right now. My money would be on Spurs as  the most likely if I had to pick one, but there aren't many chances.

At the Emriates Ndidi makes a good, last-ditch tackle on Ozil, so Arsenal have a corner, but Giroud is penalised immediately. As you were.

21:24

81 mins; Olivier Giroud is not happy, and you can see why. Yohan Benalouane has climbed all over him there, by putting a fut in the small of his back and launching upwards. He is rightly booked.

A moment later, at the other end, Xhaka joins him in the book. That was predictable. Still goal-less

21:22

64 mins: If Kyle Walker owns a pair of shooting boots - and the stats suggest he doesn't - he certainly isn't wearing them tonight.

The Spurs right back has had a number of efforts today, and none of them have come close - the latest is curled wide from the edge of the box.

21:21

79 mins: Arsenal fans, look away now. This is bad, bad news. Unchallenged, off the ball, Laurent Koscielny has gone down holding his right knee. Arsenal have made all of their subs, and their captain might have a bad one. For now, he hobbles back on...

21:19

77 mins: For those inside the Emirates you can feel the frustration growing. Xhaka is penalised for a foul, shows dissent, and gets a long chat from the referee. All of which serves to slow the game down.

At Selhurst Park Alli has tries his luck from the edge of the box, and draws a decent save from Hennessey.

21:17
Sportsmail's Kieran Gill at the Emirates

It seems a lack-lustre scrap for Champions League qualification doesn’t appeal to Arsenal’s supporters.

This is arguably the emptiest the Emirates Stadium has been this season, with thousands of vacant red seats visible.

The club say there have been 59,829 tickets bought and sold. The number of bums in seats is nowhere near that.

21:17

74 mins: Arsene Wenger has thrown the dice. Coquelin and Walcott off. Giroud and Ramsey on. 15 minutes to go and Arsenal need a goal!

21:16

57 mins: How has that not gone in? Spurs looking to take advantage of Palace's re-organised defence, and they are just starting to turn the screw.

Alli arrives to meet a cross at the back post, four yards out, but somehow, somehow, manages to put it across the face of goal and out for a goal kick.

Harry Kane has been booked for a late tackle on Puncheon.

21:13

Nothing happening at Selhurst Park, because we've spent the last five minutes waiting for Sakho to be taken off on a stretcher. A really nasty fall that, we must hope he's ok.

21:12
Sportsmail's Craig Hope at the Riverside

SAFC fans: "You're going down with the Sunderland" Boro fans: "You're going down with the Boro"

It's good everyone has a sense of humour, isn't it!

21:12
Dele Alli hasn't had much luck so far tonight...
...but Alexis Sanchez went close before being denied by Robert Huth
21:10

Another foul on Zaha's magical feet, this time from Sissoko, no booking this time. Sakho then injures himself by fouling Kane. It's scrappy in south London.

Further north, Arsene Wenger has changed his system, bringing on Danny Welbeck for Kieran Gibbs. Unless the striker goes to left wing-back, I'd suggest that means a back four now. Shinji Okazaki replaces Ulloa for Leicester.

21:08

66 mins: Sunderland have been a lot better in this second half, but they still haven't really created a clear-cut chance. Their season looks to be over unless they change that!

21:07

64 mins: This is superb from Mesut Ozil, who twists past two men with no space at all. The cross is blocked for a corner, which Bellerin delivers for Koscielny, but the header is straight into the keeper's gloves.

Arsenal are knocking at the door, but, so far, it has remained closed.

21:05

48 mins: Son coming on means a change of system of course for Spurs, and it almost works straight away. Davies gets forward from left back, his cross towards the near post is almost good enough for Kane, but Kelly deflects it behind for a corner

21:03

57 mind: Spurs take one man with a booking off, and anotehr goes in the book seconds later, Walker cautioned for a blatant shove on Zaha, who takes a heavy fall into the ad boards. He's ok though.

21:02

A double change at the break for Spurs, with Son Heung-min and Mousa Sissoko coming on, in place of Wanyama and Dembele. An admission from Pochettino that his midfielder should have been sent off?

21:01

58 mins: What a save! Schmeichel to the rescue for Leicester and Huth, as the German deflects Xhaka's shot, but the keeper adjusts superbly to push it away.

20:58

55 mins: Arsenal's best moment of the game, denied only by a brilliant last-ditch Huth tackle. Xhaka started the move off, playing in Bellerin down the right.

Walcott's run drew the defence away, the Spaniard picked out Sanchez, and he was about to slot home from seven yards when Huth got a toe in. Brilliant defending.

20:56

53 mins: Christian Fuchs is the latest man into the book at the Emirates  as he clatters Theo Walcott off the ball. Silly stuff.

Leicester threaten again from a long throw, but Cech makes an easy save.

20:52
Sportsmail's Kieran Gill at the Emirates

Jamie Vardy’s first visit to the Emirates since snubbing a summer move to Arsenal is seeing him isolated up top. Very little service to the striker.

Hitting the side-netting was as close as he got to scoring in the sixth minute.

20:52

48 mins: I feel like a broken record. Arsenal probing nicely around the box, but really haven't looked like cutting through just yet.

At the Riverside Brad Guzan makes a good save to deny Wahbi Khazri a goal from a free kick.

20:48
Back underway

Second halves begin in the two earlier games, and Hector Bellierin sprints down the right to win a corner inside 30 seconds at the Emirates. The delivery is straight into the hands of Schmeichel though.

20:46
Half-time: Crystal Palace 0-0 Tottenham

46 mins: What a chance for Palace to grab a goal right at the death... Some horrible Tottenham defending and they've conceded a corner...

I think it was Alderweireld's mistake, failing to deal with a simple long ball, but Palace don't make it count, the corner comes to nothing and that's half time. Goalless.

20:45
Firing over
Kyle Walker has had Tottenham's best chance, but volleyed over from inside the box
20:44

42 mins: Tottenham still not creating much, but they almost unlock the Palace defence as Walker crosses towards Kane. The England striker has done next to nothing so far today, but his flick on reaches Alli in the box. It just won't fall for the Spurs midfielder though, and Palacehold firm.

More work for Jonathan Moss, who has a word with Mousa Dembele for what feels like his 20th foul of the game. Probably not that many really!

20:40

39 mins: Andros Townsend is causing real problems for his former club, first putting in a dangerous free kick which leads to a proper scramble in the box, then, once the ball is cleared, skipping past a tackle and shooting just wide.

20:39
Half time stats
Alexis Sanchez hits the bar from range with the final shot of the first half
But it's not been a brilliant half at the Emirates, as our stats show
20:35

Victor Wanyama is a very lucky man. He's only just been booked, but he lunges into a tackle and doesn't get any of the ball. The crowd wanted a second yellow, but the referee decides a strong word is enough...

Controversial.

20:33
HALF TIME

Just the one goal so far as the half-time whistles sound at two Premier League games - goalless between Arsenal and Leicester, while Boro lead 1-0 against Sunderland.

20:32

Chances everywhere! Dele Alli is penalised while sniffing around for a chance in the six-yard box, not quite sure what that was given for to be quite honest. He didn't turn the ball goalwards anyway.

At the Emirates Alexis Sanchez tries his luck from 25 yards, and rattles the bar! That's the last meaningful action of the half!

20:30

Amid the football, a lovely moment. The Riverside unites in the 44th minute to sing Ugo Ehiogu's name.

20:30

28 mins: Spurs' key man for the last few weeks, Eriksen, gets a chance in the Palace box for the first time, but he is closed down quickly, and after a fist shot is blocked the second is easy for Hennessey to save.

20:29

42 mins: The problem with this Arsenal system is that the chances all seem to be dropping to the wrong men! Clever play works the ball into space in the box, but it's Coquelin on the end of it, and his shot lacks confidence - it's easily blocked.

The same thing happens with Walcott, who is isolated in the middle. Arsenal dominating the ball, and creating nice positions, but no cutting edge yet.

20:26

27 mins: After a shaky start Tottenham have grown into this, but as they camp on the edge of the Palace box Wanyama takes a heavy touch, and is booked as he lunges to get the ball back.

20:25

39 mins: That was the Riyad Mahrez of last season! Sensational, jinking run from the Algerian, beating Gabriel and then Bellerin before firing just wide of Cech's near post. Wonderful play.

20:24

23 mins: A terrible passage of play at Selhurst park. Kelly plays the ball towards his own goal, but into space, Eriksen's cross isn't dealt with by Sakho, and then Walker volleys miles over. A serious lack of quality from everyone.

In north London Danny Simpson is booked for a cynical foul on Bellerin.

20:22

36 mins: A shot! A shot for Sunderland! Didier Ndong has it, but Guzan makes the saveto deny him from range.

At the Emirates Alexis Sanchez wants a penalty, but the flag was already up for offside before Benalouane pushed him. Probably wouldn't have been given anyway!

20:20

18 mins: A first attacking chance for Walker, but his cross is dreadful, going out of play well in front of the near post.

Not that much in the way of chances yet, but Palace have head the better of this.

Christian Benteke's shot is comfortably saved by Hugo Lloris
20:18
A picture tells 1000 words
Just look at the contrasting reactions of the two managers as the goal goes in...
20:16

15 mins: Hugo Lloris is forced into his first save of the night, diving low to his right to deny Benteke, but it's comfortable enough.

They may have had a day less to rest since their last fixture, but Palace look much the fresher side so far.

20:14

27 mins: Finally a good move from Arsenal, this time down the right. The highligh of it is a sumptuous pass from Ozil to Bellerin, before Walcott draws a good save from Schmeichel.

The Gunners just beginning to tick now, Bellerin gets forward again moments later and forces a corner, which Gabriel heads across goal and Fuchs has to take off the head of Monreal two yards out.

20:12

12 mins: Every time Zaha gets on the ball the whole stadium seems to let out a shiver of excitement. And that's why! With two men in front of him the Ivory Coast winger twists one way, then the other, to leave them both utterly bamboozled.

His cross finds Townsend, but Spurs have enough bodies back to prevent anything too dangerous.

20:11
Sportsmail's Craig Hope at the Riverside

This is going some, but this might be the worst I've seen Sunderland play this season. Embarrassing stuff first 25mins.

20:10

10 mins: Sloppy stuff from Kyle Walker gifts Palace possession in a dangerous area, but the hosts don't turn it into anything.

Still, it's safe to say that Allardyce hasn't set his team up to stifle Spurs here - they're going for it.

20:09

22 mins: What a save! Another brilliant Leicester opportunity, as Arsenal fail to deal with a set piece. The ball drops to Mahrez, he volleys at goal from eight yards, but Cech does brilliantly to tip it over the bar

20:08

Boro are on top at home, as Pickford is forced into another save to deny Downing - and the visiting fans aren't happy..

Sportsmail's Craig Hope at the Riverside:

There we have it, yet another shocking passage of play from SAFC and the chants emerge - "We want Moyesy out, we want Moyesy out".

20:05
Sportsmail's Matt Barlow at the Emirates

Subdued opening. Good chance for Vardy slammed into the side-netting and not a lot else.

Forced to find their own amusement, Leicester fans sing that they want Arsene Wenger to stay.

Arsenal fans back their man: “Arsene Wenger, he’s won more than you.”

20:05

3 mins: What a start in south London! Harry Kane has a shot blocked from the corner, then Andros Townsend goes down the other end and wins a free kick in a dangerous area.

Only a really brave tackle stops one Palace shot, before Zaha gets one on one with a defender and sends another effort across goal. Cracking opening.

20:03

15 mins: That was a lovely Arsenal move, with Alexis Sanchez dropping deep, and then Xhaka threading the ball in for Gibbs in the box, but his cross was poor.

Moments later Monreal, who netted against City on Sunday, tries a clever flick from a corner, but it's across the face of goal and Sanchez can't poke home.

20:00
Underway at Palace

So, all three games are now up and running - with Spurs immediately taking control of the ball at Selhurst Park and winning a corner inside 65 seconds!

20:00
Stat!
20:00

12 mins: Everything going down the Arsenal left so far, but not much to tell you in the way of proper chances.

As you might expect, Francis Coquelin is providing energy and aggression, but perhaps not the quality of passing of some of his team-mates...

GOAL! Middlesbrough 1-0 Sunderland (De Roon)

The first goal of the night, and it's gone to the side who usually can't buy a goal! Adam Clayton's ball over the top found Marten de Roon, and he slipped it past Pickford

19:54

6 mins: Leicester should be ahead! Alexis Sanchez tries a ridiculous backheel on the edge of his own box, gifting possession to Albrigthon.

He finds Vardy in the box, but the shot is into the side netting. What a chance.

At the other end, Gibss is getting joy down the left, but he crosses in the air towards Theo Walcott, who is unsurprisingly out-jumped.

Big Sam speaks

Sam Allardyce has now given his pre-match thoughts, and he sounds determined to register another shock!

'It's our catch-up game, with the FA Cup. It will be a hugely difficult game, and Tottenham are in fantastic form, before the FA Cup seven wins on the trot.

'We've exceeded expectation recently, but lets not get carried away. We'll play our best, hopefully that's enough.

'Yes, a win makes us safe. It's years and years since anyone went down with 41 points. We're in a good position, so any point is a bonus because other teams are not playing.

'We've given ourself a little bit of breathing space but it's not going to stop us trying to go out in front of our fans and try and upset one of the big boys again.'

19:50

3 mins: Jamie Vardy has started brightly, pulling to the left and attacking Gabriel, the right-sided of Arsenal's three centre backs.

He's not had a lot of support though so far, and Arsenal look threatening going forward, particularly when Sanchez and Ozil link up...

19:47
Empty seats

As Matt says, it's not in any way full at the Emirates! To be fair to Gunners fans, it often isn't full at kick-off for a midweek game, but usually it fills up as people get to the ground after work.

I'd suggest this is more tardiness than it is a protest

19:45

And we're underway!

19:39
Poch speaks

Mauricio Pochettino has been speaking ahead of the game, and here's what he had to say:

'We are at the end of the season, now it's so important with Cheslea after they won yesterday. We need to get three points to try to reduce the gap.

'Every game is a big test, for everyone. It's important that we move on after Saturday. We are disappointed to be out and lose a semi-final. But it's a different game, we are ready to compete. We can win or lose, but the team is ready to compete.

'They beat Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal, they are very confident in the way they play.'

19:39
Who's going to win?

Just a little over 20 minutes until kick-off in the two earlier games, so here's a few big-game stats for you, one from each game, courtesy of our friends at Opta.

9 - Arsenal have won each of their last nine Premier League home encounters with Leicester; the longest current run in the division. Rhythm.

4 - Tottenham haven’t won an away top-flight London derby since their last visit to Selhurst Park in January 2016 (D2 L2 since). Renewed.

236 - As of today, Sunderland will have spent 236 days in the relegation zone in the Premier League this season. Ailing.

19:20

Ahead of kick-off at the Emirates, some transfer news for you - and Arsene Wenger has been asked about Europe's hottest property, Kylian Mbappe.

'Of course [we're targeting Mbappe],' Wenger told SFR Sport. 'It would be hypocritical and a lie to say we're not following him.

'But he's perhaps already in the category of clubs who perhaps have more financial potential than us.'

Strong bench

Arsenal have made plenty of changes from the weekend, and that means these three are all on the bench.

Remember, in this fixture last season Danny Welbeck came off the bench to score a dramatic winner - will he do so again tonight I wonder?

Sam Allardyce also makes two changes, but does not rotate as much as he hinted he might after the win over Liverpool.

James Tomkins was ruled out through injury, so Mamadou Sakho returns seamlessly, and James McArthur comes into midfield in place of Yohan Cabaye.

TEAM NEWS - Middlesbrough v Sunderland

Sunderland are unchanged from the team that earned a point against West Ham, with Billy Jones fit to play, and no place even on the bench for Grant Leadbitter against his former club.

The home side make two changes, and it looks like a switch to a back four, with Antonio Barragan dropping out and Adam Forshaw adding another body in midfield, while Cristhian Stuani comes in for the suspended Gaston Ramirez.

Middlesbrough: Guzan; Chambers, Ayala, Gibson, Friend; Clayton, De Roon, Forshaw, Downing, Stuani; Negredo

Sunderland: Pickford; Jones, Denayer, O'Shea, Manquillo; Gibson, Cattermole, Ndong, Khazri; Anichebe, Defoe

18:52
TEAM NEWS - Leicester

Two changes for Leicester from the team that were put out of Europe by Atletico Madrid.

Robert Huth returns to replace the injured Wes Morgan - we expected that - while Leonardo Ulloa comes in up front for Shinji Okazaki to partner Jamie Vardy.

Vardy, of course, won a controversial penalty in this fixture last season, and was a summer transfer target for Arsenal. So expect him to be fired up for this one.

Leicester: Schmeichel; Simpson, Benalouane, Huth, Fuchs; Mahrez, Ndidi, Drinkwater, Albrighton; Ulloa, Vardy

18:50
TEAM NEWS - Arsenal

Right, there are your line-ups, so let's have a look at what they might mean, starting at the Emirates with Arsenal.

It looks like Arsene Wenger might be sticking with a back three, but with Nacho Monreal at left back - either that, or Kieran Gibbs will be on the left wing in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Francis Coquelin replaces Aaron Ramsey in midfield alongside Granit Xhaka, Hector Bellerin gives Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain a rest down the right, and Theo Walcott is in for Olivier Giroud up front.

Arsenal: Cech; Gabriel, Koscielny, Monreal; Bellerin, Coquelin, Xhaka, Gibbs; Ozil, Sanchez; Walcott

Arsenal had a gruelling game on Sunday, needing 120 minutes to get past City, while Leicester had their collective feet up watching on TV - they haven't played a game since last Tuesday.

Will that mean we see some rotation from Arsene Wenger, perhaps even a change in system back to 4-2-3-1? Team news is about 15 minutes away, so we shall see...

Arsenal had to work hard this weekend, so will Arsene Wenger rest his big names?

Palace out for another big scalp?

It's been a remarkable month for Sam Allardyce and his men - Crystal Palace have beaten Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool in April, and will now be searching for a fourth big win against a top-six team.

Can they do it? Spurs are in formidable form at the moment, coming into this game off the back of seven straight league wins - but how much will the defeat by Chelsea have dented their confidence?

Gathering clouds...

It's not been a comfortable few weeks for Arsene Wenger recently, and the clouds are gathering over the Emirates again this evening.

Fortunately for the Gunners boss, these ones are purely literal, rather than metaphorical!

Don't forget the strugglers

Of course, a lot of the attention will be on the top of the table tonight, but there's a North East derby that has huge ramifications at the other end.

The 'Derby of Doom', as it has been christened, could leave one of Sunderland and Middlesbrough with a sliver of hope that they might beat the drop.

However, given the two teams have one Premier League win between them in 2017, you might want to put some money on a draw...

Building momentum, and bouncing back

What a contrasting few days it has been for the two north London clubs.

Spurs were beaten by Chelsea on Saturday, then saw their Premier League rivals roar back into a seven point lead at the top of the Premier League last night.

Arsenal, on the other hand, will have their tails up after getting to a third FA Cup final in four years with a superb win over Manchester City, and then seeing Liverpool drop points hours later.

For very different reasons, tonight is a big, big night for the capital's three biggest clubs. Welcome to Sportsmail's coverage of all the mid-week Premier League action!
