Barcelona name just one Spaniard in starting XI for the first time in their 118-year history for win over Leganes
- Sergi Roberto was the sole Spanish player in the starting XI for Barcelona
- According to Spanish stats guru MisterChip, it was the first time in their history
- Barcelona needed a late Lionel Messi penalty to edge past lowly Leganes
- Win puts them within one point of Real Madrid having played two games more
Barcelona started a match with just one Spanish player for the first time in their entire 118-year history, according to Spanish statistics guru Mister Chip.
Sergi Roberto was the sole Spaniard in Luis Enrique's starting line-up as Barca beat relegation-threatened Leganes 2-1 at the Nou Camp.
However Barcelona fans concerned with the slowing of La Masia's production line shouldn't panic too much, as academy graduates Gerard Pique, Andres Iniesta and Carles Alena were on the bench.
Barcelona left Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique on the bench for the 2-1 win over Leganes
Sergi Roberto was the sole Spaniard named in Barcelona's starting XI against Leganes
They were named alongside fellow Spaniards Denis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Paco Alcacer as Barcelona relied on their Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi to save them against Leganes.
Messi gave the home side the lead in the fourth minute before Leganes's on-loan midfielder Unai Lopez equalised in the 71st minute despite what looked a foul on Roberto in the build-up.
But Barcelona were spared the blushes of another poor result following their 4-0 hammering at Paris Saint-Germain when Neymar was brought down in the area with two minutes left.
Spanish statistics guru MisterChip tweeted that it was the first time in the club's entire history
Barcelona needed a late Lionel Messi winner from the penalty spot to secure the victory
And Messi duly stepped up to score the winner from the spot to put his side above Sevilla and within one point of leaders Real Madrid, although Barca have played two games more.
After the game Enrique criticised fans who booed midfielder Andre Gomes though he said he accepted those who were whistling at him.
Luis Enrique has been under intense pressure since the 4-0 Champions League defeat to PSG
Enrique's contract is up at the end of the season and Barcelona have already been linked with a host of replacements for their manager, including Sevilla's Jorge Sampaoli and Everton boss Ronald Koeman.
Barcelona travel to Atletico Madrid's Vicente Calderon this Saturday.
