Chelsea's Diego edges out Helder in battle of the Costas but Wolves winger showed why he is attracting top flight attention with busy FA Cup display

  • Diego and Helder Costa both started, for Chelsea and Wolves respectively
  • Chelsea's striker won the battle, scoring late on to secure victory for his side
  • Helder did show why he is attracting attention from some Premier League sides
  • Both players are likely to be the subject of high bids in the summer window
  • MATCH REPORT: Pedro and Diego Costa secure FA Cup progress for Chelsea

Chelsea's Costa edged this contest with his namesake from Wolves but it was fitting that after the final whistle the pair came together to share a few words.

Presumably speaking in their Portuguese mother tongues, Diego Costa and Helder Costa chatted warmly and might well have praised each other for two fine displays.

The Chelsea striker left the happier, having scored a sharply-taken goal in the final minute to confirm this FA Cup victory. But Wolves' winger showed why he is attracting attention from the upper echelons of the Premier League with a busy performance adorned with occasional bursts of quality.

Signed permanently in a £13million deal last month following a successful loan spell, Costa may well be subject to bids of a higher value this summer and Wolves would have a decision to make.

Antonio Conte is set for a similar situation with his Costa, given the obvious lure from China, but this was a full-blooded appearance to suggest he still has much to offer the English game.

Wolves' Costa, initially signed on loan from Benfica, had gilded this season's competition with wonderful moments in each of the last two rounds, so was always a certainty to start here.

For the Costa of Chelsea hue an appearance from the off appeared less certain with Conte telegraphing changes but once again Michy Batshuayi was consigned to the bench.

So we would get a full version of the smiling Costa versus the snarling Costa. Paul Lambert said his Costa never frowns whether on the pitch or off, but it did not take too long for the Costa in the visiting team to exhibit his proclivity for confrontation.

The opening shots in a series of exchanges with Danny Batth came in the first half when Costa shoved the Wolves captain to the floor. Batth rejected a handshake offered in appeasement, whipping up the crowd.

Jack Price was the next to make good on Lambert's instructions to get physical with Costa, yapping at his heels with increasing bite and winning the ball at the third attempt to leave his opponent on the floor.

In the second period Costa turned Batth inside out but slammed his shot into the side netting, and soon after there was a glare for referee Jon Moss for failing to spot the central defender hauling him down off the ball as Chelsea countered.

Wolves' Costa had his own recurring battle with Pedro, who was given an unorthodox wing-back role by Conte and at times showed why it is an experiment unlikely to be repeated in top-flight games.

Pedro, no slouch himself, was made to look as if moving in treacle when Costa sped past him to win a corner in the first half, and there were two more such incidents after the break.

First Costa shot past Pedro to win a free-kick and see the former Barcelona player yellow carded. Then he spun neatly to confound Pedro again and prove he is not a wing-back.

But a minute later, Pedro was celebrating the opening strike. The Spaniard actually started the move with a long pass crossfield, then got into the box seconds later to be on the end of Willian's cross and head in.

Costa played his part, stretching Wolves' defence with a deep run to collect Cesc Fabregas' pass to create space for Pedro at the far post.

The Brazilian-born Spain international got his own name on the scorehseet in the dying moments. The ball only fell loose for a split-second in the Wolves box but he leapt like a predator on prey to steer a finish into the far corner.

So blue beat gold in this debut contest between two Costas but it is unlikely to be the last fight.
