Tony Pulis has told West Bromwich Albion they need to buy in January and asked his bosses to loosen their ‘tight and rigid and strict’ transfer budget.

The 58-year-old saw his side lose 4-0 to Tottenham on Saturday and said afterwards that West Brom are nowhere near those in the Premier League’s top six.

West Brom missed out on Manchester United’s Morgan Schneiderlin who joined Everton for £24m instead and Pulis says new signings are a must.

‘We need to bring players in,’ Pulis said. ‘We’re desperately disappointed that we didn’t get Schneiderlin. He’s gone to Everton which was disappointing for us.

‘We have to improve and everyone knows that.

‘It’s always tough doing business when you’re outside the top six.

‘We need a lift and not just the players. I think everybody around the place [needs a lift] by bringing a couple of good players in. That’s important. The club has to do it.’

West Brom have had a fine first half to the season as they currently sit eighth but they know reinforcements are required if they are to stay towards the top of the table.

Pulis is not in contact with owner Guochuan Lai directly but instead goes through West Brom chairman John Williams.

‘John is who I speak to and John speaks to the owners,’ Pulis added. ‘The owners have been fine. There are no problems there.

‘Obviously we’ve got a budget that is pretty tight and rigid and strict but that’s never been any different since I walked into the place.’
