‘Drink-driver' spins off the road and smashes through railings leaving his £50,000 Mercedes wedged in a BASEMENT of a luxury Hyde Park apartment block before he WALKS AWAY unscathed

A suspected drink-driver span off the road and smashed through railings - leaving his pricey Mercedes wedged in a basement.

The man, who has since been arrested, crashed into a luxury apartment block around 5am near Hyde Park, central London.

Luckily, the driver was not injured - despite his car being a write-off.

The Metropolitan Police, London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade all attended the scene at Lancaster Terrace

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: 'Police were called at 05:17hrs on Friday, 15 December, to a car in collision with a building in Lancaster Terrace, W2.

'Officers, London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade attended. The driver of the car did not require hospital treatment.

'He was arrested on suspicion of drink-drive offences. He has been taken into custody at a south west London police station.'   

The car - a Mercedes-Benz C220 diesel convertible - can reach speeds of 144mph, and costs up to £50,000.

Apartments in Fountain House, the luxury serviced block that the car was crashed into, can sell for as much as £2million.

Alexander Bergman, a tourist staying in a basement flat within Fountain House, told the Evening Standard: 'We feel very lucky, that’s my bedroom window he came through. 

'We didn’t notice how close it was until we pulled back the curtain and saw this car. We only arrived in London yesterday.. what a welcome.'

A receptionist at the block said the crash caused no structural damage to the building. 

The A402 Lancaster Terrace at the junction of Bayswater Road was closed for several hours after the collision this morning but has now reopened.
