Michael Moore takes the audience of his Broadway show - including Mark Ruffalo and Olivia Wilde - to protest at Trump Tower after he blamed 'both sides' for Charlottesville violence

  • Crowds gathered outside the tower on Tuesday night, following an earlier protest that was held on Monday
  • Some held signs complaining about his recent comments about the Charlottesville, Va. violence
  • Earlier Tuesday, Trump claimed that 'both sides' were to blame for an alleged murder by a white supremacist
  • Michael Moore also took the audience of his Broadway show 'The Terms of My Surrender' to the protest
  • But the bulk of the group gathered as a response to Texas's threat to legally challenge DACA legislation
  • DACA is an Obama-era legislation that allows undocumented people brought to the US as children to stay
  • Texas has demanded Trump announce a phasing-out of the program by September 5 or it will go to court
  • Crowds held up signs demanding that Trump stand up and stop the repeal from happening
  • Trump returned to his tower on Monday night for the first time since he was inaugurated as president

Michael Moore joined in the protests against Donald Trump on Tuesday night - and took the audience of his Broadway show to the party with him.

At the close of his show, The Terms of My Surrender, he invited the audience aboard two double-decker buses - paid for by the production - to join the protests at Trump Tower.

On arrival, he announced: 'We are here to perform a citizens arrest - well there's lots of police there, maybe they'll do it for us.'

He was then joined by actor Mark Ruffalo - best known as the Incredible Hulk's alter-ego Bruce Banner - who ranted that Trump has 'allowed white supremacists, he's allowed the KKK, he's allowed Nazis to show their ugly face.

'And we're here to show him that there's a cost for that, Americans have died for that.'

He then commanded the crowd to say the name of say the name of the woman allegedly run down by a white supremacist in Charlottesville on Saturday: 'Heather Heyer! Heather Heyer!'

Trump had caused controversy earlier in the day by doubling down on his claims that 'both sides' were to blame to the violence that led to Heyer's death.

Actresses Olivia Wilde and Zoe Kazan also joined the group, with Kazan demanding an end to 'white supremacy in the White House' and the cessation of 'Nazi rhetoric in 2017.'

They arrived several hours into the protests, which had begun as crowds gathered in the early evening around Trump Tower in order to attack the president's leadership.

Many in the crowd objected to Trump's remarks about Charlottesville, but the bulk of the protesters had gathered to demand Trump stand up to Texas' planned legal challenge to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) legislation.

That Obama-era policy helps undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US as children, but Texas says it will attack DACA in court unless Trump announces a phase-out program by September 5.

Holding signs with messages like 'Undocumented, unafraid, unapologetic' and 'They stay, you go,' they alternately reprimanded Trump for his heavy-handed immigration policies and demanded he stop Texas in its tracks.

Trump had some supporters among the crowd, too - although they were vastly outnumbered in the liberal city.

The president returned to his beloved tower late on Monday night - the first time he's set foot in the building since he was elected.

Obama's proposed amnesty on deporting parents of undocumented immigrant children, termed DAPA, was ruled illegal in 2014 after a challenge by Texas, but nobody has threatened to mount a challenge on DACA until now, The Washington Times wrote.

If Texas wins, then protections on Obama's so-called Dreamers - who are presently allowed to stay in the US to pursue education - will be lifted, allowing them to be deported.

Pro-DACA lawyers are calling on Trump to use his power to stop Texas from mounting the challenge.

That's certainly the attitude that many at the demonstration seemed to share. But many others seemed to be there mostly to vent their anger at Trump's bold immigration moves.

He has empowered Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, shifting the focus from new and criminal undocumented immigrants to any undocumented people at all - leading to raids and deportation. He has also tried to squeeze cities he identifies as sanctuary cities for immigrants.

That has infuriated some who say only violent criminal immigrants should be deported.
