Ex-MP Lembit Opik, 52, reveals he is having a child with a 33-year-old Bulgarian lawyer despite fears he was sterile after impaling himself on a tree

Politician Lembit Opik, who was famously engaged to one of the Cheeky Girls, has revealed he is to have a child with a Bulgarian lawyer at the age of 52.

The ex-Lib Dem MP made the announcement despite fears he was sterile after impaling himself on a tree when he was six. 

His pregnant girlfriend, Sabina Vankova, 33, wants all of the women from his past - including a student 24 years his junior and a weathergirl - to be put behind them.

Opik, who underwent major surgery in 2016 to straighten his wonky jaw - which was caused by a paragliding accident 19 years ago - initially wanted to keep the news quiet.

His former fiancees, weather presenter Sian Lloyd and Cheeky Girls singer Gabriela Irimia, both miscarried when they were pregnant.

But the former I'm a Celebrity contestant has revealed he is expecting his first child - a girl - in less than two months, reports the Daily Mirror.

Speaking to the newspaper, he said: 'I get emotional about it all the time. The arrival of our baby is compellingly exciting. 

'I've wanted to have kids for a long time. It's an emotive, uplifting, hope-making feeling.'

He added: 'In 1971, I had a very serious accident when I fell 10ft out of a tree, impaled myself on a stick and damaged my personal parts. That could have meant that I was sterile.

'I've twice been in situations where I tried to have children, which both ended in miscarriage. I didn't want to talk about this pregnancy until I was sure things would be OK.'

Opik became famous for his colourful love life and was also linked to lingerie model Katie Green and student Merily McGivern, 21.

But in July 2015, he met Miss Vankova at a political party to celebrate Tim Farron's appointment as Lib Dem leader. Miss Vankova was there as a supporter and voted for Farron.

The ex-MP for Montgomeryshire said she 'seemed very intelligent' and was impressed she was a qualified lawyer - adding they had 'natural chemistry'.

They spent the night together and Sabina admitted she did not know who Opik was until she Googled him the next day - and moved in with him six weeks later.

The pair started trying for a baby in June last year and she became pregnant in September.   

Miss Vankova hopes the couple will get married in the near future.

Speaking about the jaw surgery last year, Opik said: 'You can tell the difference when you look from the side the most and my friends have really noticed it. 

'I am seeing my mum for the first time since the operation today and I am sure she will notice.

'I have another op to go but it feels so different, for the first time in my life I have a straight face.'
