The number of Americans severely behind on payments on federal student loans reached roughly 4.6 million in the third quarter, a doubling from four years ago, despite a historically long stretch of U.S. job creation and steady economic growth.
In the third quarter alone, the count of such defaulted borrowersdefined by the government as those who havent made a payment in at least a yeargrew by nearly 274,000, according to Education Department data released Tuesday.
The total number of defaulted borrowers represents about 22% of the Americans who were required to be paying down their federal student loans as of Sept. 30. That figure has increased from 17% four years earlier.

Kleptocrats. Knew it from the beginning. Why pay it back when you don’t have to?
This is definitely the next “bubble” - no question. Too many people with college degrees that don’t translate to employment: Art History, Oral Communication, English Literature, Religious Philosophy, “Marketing”....
Why pay for something you can never use?
Yep, something has to give somewhere. I am of the opinion that there is a clear undercurrent that has been in development that people are deliberately giving up paying back their loans. For some time now the people who have borrowed this money have been essentially talking among themselves about the unfairness and unjustness of student loans, thus rationalizing that they really shouldn’t have to actually pay it back.
So we’ll what happens. My fear is that people will increasingly decide not to pay back the loans justifying that the loans are unjust. Then, at some national election time another Bernie type will come along with some weak willed “Republican” and it will be a race to see how much taxpayers will be required to shell out to pay off these defaulted student loans.
Mark my words.
Thanks, Hussein Obama, you LOSER. Your PLAN is working perfectly!
Anyone else wonder how many non-citizens this involves?
These defaulted loans need to be pursued just like back taxes.
No quarter.
Seize bank accounts, pay checks, businesses and property.
The Dems will offer forgiveness. When Obama had the government take over student laws, this was the ultimate objective.
The amount given out in student loans is clearly excessive.
Here is my proposal with respect to loan amount limits.

And that 22% is probably has many of those with the largest amounts outstanding.
In my area, the new jobs are mainly in the building trades.

Be aware the indebted snowflakes can emigrate.
I think that the message that was distributed by the 0bama administration was that we couldn’t possibly expect people to pay back student loans. No matter how this is resolved, it will cost the rest of us, and those who took loans they now refuse to pay will skate “Scott-free”, as the saying goes. This ticks me off. My son served 4 years in USMC for help with his college expenses, and my daughter paid off her loans ahead of schedule, based on having a good job and a good sense of responsibility.
If these low-life defaulters would be threatened with having their cell phones or Netflix taken away, they would probably find a way to start making payments.
The honest among us will forever be paying for freeloaders and Obama’s people.
Our reward: higher federal taxes under the new tax plan starting next year, and the likelihood we'll be the ones nailed to pay for everyone else defaulting on their loans.
^getting her BA
No job till payments are made on the loan. DONE!
