Why China Plans to Invade Taiwan
The National Interest ^ | 11 Dec, 2017 | Ian Easton

A Chinese diplomat in Washington recently threatened that China would invade Taiwan if the U.S. Navy sent a ship to visit the democratic island, something that Congress has called upon the Pentagon to do in 2018. Is this just empty rhetoric? Or does it reflect Beijing's actual intentions? It's actually a bit of both.

According to leaked Chinese military documents (analyzed here), Taiwan stands to lose more from the rise of China as a twenty-first-century superpower than any other country in the world. Indeed, China's emergence as the world’s second largest political, economic and military power threatens the interests of many nations, but only Taiwan has its life at stake. Only Taiwan is held at risk of seeing its trade lines severed, its cities bombed and its shores invaded. Only Taiwan faces the possibility of having its president assassinated and its democracy destroyed. China's authoritarian government challenges many countries in many ways, but it only has war plans for the invasion and occupation of Taiwan.

Too bad Taiwan does not have a Rifle behind every blade of grass.

Taiwan’s days of freedom might just be numbered.China knows that the only power able to prevent an invasion will do nothing.

They issued the threat because it is less risky than the reality.

4D chess. Xi gets Taiwan and the US out of Korea. The US gets the Nork threat neutralized and we still get cheap stuff from China and Seoul. Trump is willing to go balls to the wall, Congress and the Deep State not so much.

They have cruise missiles capable of hitting the Three Gorges Dam. What they don't have is the will to stop China at the certain cost of their own destruction...

Are there any countries that could credibly make a "Death before Surrender" threat anymore? MAD worked because we meant it. Those days and those people are gone.

My brother has lived in Taiwan for decades. Luckily, he is brilliant. I hope he can get out in time, if need be.

Communist or fascist, some nations want empire. Centralized governments of all kinds continue stubbornly with expansionism.

My wife is from Taiwan and I have been there several times. They are freer there than in the states. People are nice, moral values are high and would be a great place to live except it’s too crowded.

china wants Taiwans money. china does not understand that Taiwan has become rich because of free enterprise.

Or a nuclear Arsenal.

Hogwash. China has war plans for the invasion of Taiwan, Vietnam, India, Laos, Burma, Russia and North Korea.
