CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuela’s new pro-government Constituent Assembly formally moved Friday to assume the powers of the opposition-dominated congress, completing what critics call a power grab that effectively puts all branches of government under the control of President Nicolás Maduro.

The Constituent Assembly, created in a July 30 vote decried as fraud by the opposition and a host of nations, had begun to assume the role of the National Assembly, whose members were democratically elected in 2015.

But in a move likely to spark further international condemnation, the motion Friday formalized the arrangement. The body was also poised to pass a new law that critics say could be used to punish opposition leaders and anti-government protesters with as much as 25 years in prison.

Government always tends to move in the direction of totalitarian dictatorship, unless the people stand in the way. The people never stand in the way, because they want benefits from the government.

The price of those benefits is loss of freedom.

Obama and a cadre of Lefty actors will be traveling to Venezuela to celebrate Maduro’s victory......

or they will stay silent and hope no one asks them about this.

Media focuses on the paid leftist agitators, and not on the normal people.

It’s called “Free Speech Rally.” We are the only ones who are pushing for free speech! The leftist bastards want to take it away from us.

Perhaps Jimma Carter will go down there and tell
the world everything is ok.

Things are going to be very exciting after this,
the opposition has nothing to lose now, they are
for the grinder in any event.

Hey, if you have a congress that won’t work with you, create a new one! Works for me.

Just don’t do it banana-republic style. Good grief!

The Communist take over was complete after Chavez stole his elections. The rest is just details.

Jimmie Carter, 0bama, Danny Glover, and Sean Penn among other should be celebrating in Caracas right now. This is monumental after all people were making the equivalent of $12.50 per month but that was when the “B” was 8500/ 1USD now it is near 16500/1USD.

Wonder whether The Pest regrets its support of the Chavez and this regime? Will they say it was wrong?

I doubt it very much.
