Trump at NRA convention: 'Eight-year assault' on gun rights is over

On the eve of his 100th day in office, President Trump rallied a convention of the National Rifle Association by vowing to "never, ever infringe" on Second Amendment rights and declaring his predecessor's alleged "assault" on those freedoms is over.

“I am here to deliver you good news: the eight-year assault on your Second Amendment freedoms has come to a crashing end,” Trump told the cheering crowd.

Trump is the first sitting president to address an NRA convention in more than three decades. The last president to do so was Ronald Reagan in 1983.

Trump started his address with a freewheeling recollection of his November election victory, crediting the gun rights group for helping him win. "You came through for me and I am going to come through for you," he said.

From "conservative" Fox News:

The NRA endorsed Trump after he promised to do away with then-President Barack Obama’s efforts to strengthen background checks.

Trump himself was a onetime support of gun control before he entered politics.

During the presidential race, he became a champion of gun rights and often spoke about his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton’s intent to abolish the Second Amendment – a claim she never made.

So many lies, so much bias. Who says Fox News is conservative?

Fox News is dead. Time for a new, true conservative network.

For quite a while, Fox News has been as conservative as John McCain - i.e., not really, paying only lip service to the concept, in name only. It’s been amusing to watch Fox-worshipping Freepers realize it.

When you’re in NYC, even as the big man, it’s easy to get exposed to only the liberal view so much that it’s easy to just parrot what you’ve heard, especially if you don’t really care about politics other than in how they relate to your business.

And then when you start actually paying attention, it’s amazing how quickly things can click into place, especially when considering non-lib stuff.

Liberal ideologies do not stand up to thought; they only gain strength through constant repetition and indoctrination.

What will the left response be? They cannot get a judge to stop this.

And the threat will resume immediately after Trump leaves office if they dont WRITE INTO LAW what they are doing and rely instead on executive orders.

And speaking of executive orders.

Why hasn’t EVERY executive order of Obama’s been deleted by now?

Stop what?

So far all we've got is a bunch of talk.

When does Trump plan on doing something?

It seems as though every day I see some state or another coming up with a new way to jack gun owners around and all I hear is "what a friend we have in Trump."

I'd really like to see something.

CA, NY, NJ, CT and several other states are still going full steam ahead on 2A infringements.

Correct no mention of national reciprocity or the HPA I was kind of disappointed in his speech.

So far Pres. Trump has...

Nominated Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court
His Interior Sec. has eliminated the lead ammo ban on FWS wildlife refuges
Signed the bill to repeal Social Security gun ban
Signed the bill to repeal the gun ban for military veterans (Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act)

What exactly do you two want him to do about state laws? Trump has said all along that he supports state’s rights.

I do like what he is doing, but didn't suggest he could or should do something about state laws.

The only hope I see against the anti 2A states is thru the courts. I'm glad for Gorsuch, but we need at least 1 or 2 more. I can't see where Trump will not have that opportunity.

Right now I have more hope than I've had for very long time.

This wasn't a complaint?

I'd really like to see something.

Instead of lip service, let's see some action. We can start with repealing the 1986 ban on the import and sale of any automatic weapon made after that date. This is the law that has put five figure pricetags on Vietnam-era M-16s and worn-out Tommy guns.

Why stop there? Let's just get rid of 1934's NFA altogether, or at least weaken it to the point where it's toothless.

We have a so-called "pro-gun" President, right? We have a so-called "gun-friendly" Congress, right?

Do something more than just flap your gums. All of you!

Hillary might not have said she supported doing away with the 2nd amendment, but her actions showed otherwise.

Trump is, for all his weaknesses, the best pro-second amendment candidate we have had in a long time.

The previous two strong pro 2A presidents were Ike 1952 to 1960 and Reagan 1980 to 1988.

George Bush II was a weak pro gun president,

Kennedy, Ford and Nixon per pretty much neutral.

Carter, George Bush I, Truman were all weak anti-gun presidents.

Johnson, Obama and Clinton were all strongly anti- 2A

Right now if Trump continues on this current track, allows re-importation of US WWII rifles, perhaps eliminates some of the stupid laws on silencers and SBR (latter not on his list but we can hope), does something to allow permits to be like drivers licenses (this will take court cases over a period of years), well he will be a very strong pro gun president at least the equal of Ike and Reagan.

Regardless way better than Hillary, who would have been a disaster. She said flat out she intended to do something about “assault guns by presidential fiat, and give the justices she would have appointed, it likely would have stuck.

Add MA to that list. AG Healy is a troll. It’s being fought in the courts. Needs to go to the Supreme Court, until then we’re screwed.
