Too many whites in drug trials, and minorities are losing out
Sacramento Bee ^ | April 27, 2017 | Claudia Buck

Getting diagnosed with cancer was “horrific” enough. But discovering that very few African American women like herself were enrolled in clinical trials to find a cure? That was almost as distressing for Tammie Denyse, a longtime breast cancer survivor in Sacramento.

After her Sutter Health oncologist offered her a slot in a clinical trial to test a new breast cancer drug treatment, the youth pastor carefully checked the study’s protocols for potential side effects. Then promptly signed up.

According to federal data, participants in U.S. clinical trials have historically been overwhelmingly white and predominantly male.

Damn inconsiderate white men. Going out and getting a terminal disease and then volunteering for an unproven drug trial. Real jerks right up to the end.

“In a 2011 report, the Food and Drug Administration noted that blacks were 12 percent of the population but only 5 percent of clinical trial participants; Hispanics, at 16 percent of the population, represented only 1 percent.”

Finally, a real example of White Privilege.

Wow...I’m surprised.

For a lot of experiments they pay you. I was a subject quite a bit in college. Although most of the ones I was in were psychology/visual perception experiments....no experimental druge.

Others they tell you it’s an experimental drug, and you have to agree to the risks (so I’ve heard).

I would think that a chronically unemployed person (as I once was) would volunteer to be a subject long before an overprivileged white male would...

So are the black folks are claiming they are more deserving of participating in drug trials because they are more chronically unemployed than white folks?

There is a problem getting a substantial number of blacks to VOLUNTEER for chemical drug trials just as there is a problem getting them to volunteer to be organ or blood marrow donors.

Maybe a little less whining and a little more volunteering is called for?

Don’t know why they call black folks colored-

white folks are born pink, then turn white, then tan themselves brown, they turn red with too much sun, they grow green with envy, turn blue when cold, then finally they turn Grey-

And they have the nerve to call black folks colored?

Weren’t blacks representing VAST MAJORITY of the clinical trials in the 40s and the 50s before that was deemed racist?

I thought that blacks were afraid of drug trials because of some not-so-nice incidents years ago.(I forget the details.)

“I would think that a chronically unemployed person (as I once was) would volunteer to be a subject long before an overprivileged white male would...”

And why would you do that if you were already completely satisfied with the ample quantities of government-provided “free $hit?”
Good for this woman, Good for anyone to get involved in drug trials! But it seems to me that the “study” needs to go beyond the raw percentages, because it may well not have anything to do with racism or exclusion. Stupidity and ignorance could also be determining factors.

I don’t think the Tuskegee experiments were “clinical trials.”

Not by 21st century medical standards.

Wow. Even when white males are overwhelmingly the guinea-pigs in medical studies for testing experimental drugs, they’re still somehow exploiting minorities.

If, by some chance, it were shown that minorities participated in these sorts of studies in greater numbers by some razor-thin margin, who doubts we’d be reading instead that covert racist “scientists” were back at work once more: performing their evil eugenics experiments under the guise of testing experimental drugs. All the while purchasing the silence of their helpless and exploited subjects with slave wages. And for the betterment of rich, greedy, and heartless white males!

I can't think of anything, but give those dip wads 30 minutes, and they will come up with something else.

So white people are specifically being chosen to be guinea pigs for dangerous and unproven new drugs?

I’m outraged!
