A Michigan man known only as Bob describes the night he almost died, when he laid in the freezing snow for 19 hours, this way:
"I was screaming for help but my nearest neighbor is about a quarter mile away and it was 10:30 pm, but my Kelsey came."
Kelsey is Bob's dog. And she spent those same 19 hours barking her heart out for someone to come and help her Bob, who had gone to retrieve firewood, wearing only nightclothes and slippers, and had fallen and broken his neck over the New Year holiday
Bob tried to scream for help, but no one could hear him — except his Kelsey. The dog kept Bob warm by laying on top of him and licking his hands and face to keep him awake and alert. By the time Bob lost consciousness, Kelsey was screeching a strange sound that ultimately alerted his neighbor, who found him on New Year's Day.
Bob was taken to the hospital, and was shocked to discover he was free of frost bite. "I am sure it was because of Kelsey’s determination to keep me warm and safe," he said, according to the Telegraph.
Bob recovered quickly and considers Kelsey — and his attending physician — his hero.
“Kelsey kept me warm, alert, and never stopped barking for help," he said.
Man's best friend indeed.
