‘Monomals’ Is a Graphically Stunning Music Game From the Creators of ‘Heroki’, Launching Next Year

I’ve been a staunch advocate of the old adage ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ for a long time, and I’ve found that those horribly clichéd words of advice have been faithful for the vast majority of video games I’ve played. However, does that stop me getting ridiculously excited over a mere teaser trailer for the upcoming Monomals? The answer is an emphatic ‘no chance – give me the game now!’. From developers Picomy, who were responsible for Heroki ($4.99) and played a part in the upcoming Sonic Mania console release, Monomals is touted as a music game with some eccentric fishing elements, which sounds like a definitively killer combo. With a vibrant, colourful and downright stunning graphical design in the teasers Picomy have shared, Monomals looks to be one of the most exciting upcoming iOS releases, and has left me counting off the days until it launches sometime in 2018.

There’s not too much to decipher from the thirty seconds of footage in the teaser trailer for Monomals, beyond the headphone-wielding protagonist rabbit throwing a fishing line with a 3.5mm jack into the ocean. However, the developers have outlined that you’ll be tasked with fishing for the eponymous Monomals as well as creating music with the titular creatures, after which you’ll be able to share your creations online. The resulting mix sounds like Electroplankton if it actually had a ‘game’ within it, which is fitting considering the beautiful teasers perfectly embody Nintendo’s trademark aesthetic. With such a promising start and from a developer with such a strong track record, Monomals will almost certainly be awesome, and its 2018 release cannot come soon enough.
