If you own a Google Home smart speaker you now have easy access to more than 5 million recipes. Yes, the days of getting flour all over your favorite cookbook or smearing your smartphone with egg white are over. Be warned though; Google Home won't turn you into Gordon Ramsay.
If you haven't yet jumped on the smart home bandwagon be aware that Google Home is getting more capable by the day. Google's smart speaker can already recognize your whole family by voice alone and support your shopping addiction. And now it has a new trick up its sleeve...
Google Home Frees Your Hands
With a little help from Bon Appetit, The Food Network, and The New York Times, to name just three, Google Home can now read out step-by-step cooking instructions for any of over 5 million recipes. Which, seeing as cooking requires the use of two hands, could be insanely useful.
The first thing you need to do is find a recipe you want to follow. You can find one online using Google Assistant or Google Search. Once you've found one, click "Send to Google Home" to save your recipe. Then, when you're ready to start cooking, say, "OK Google, start cooking".
You can then gather your ingredients together and prepare to start cooking. Google Home will read the first step, and give you time to catch up. When you're ready to move on just say, "OK Google, next step". Or, if you need the last step repeating, say, "OK Google, repeat".
Repeat this process until you've heard every step of the recipe and you should, with some luck, have produced something tasty. Or at least edible. As we mentioned before, Google Home can help you follow a recipe, but it won't turn you into a Michelin-starred chef. At least not overnight.
A Useful Addition to Any Kitchen
This makes Google Home a useful addition to any kitchen. Especially as even the most serious chef in the world couldn't cook their way through 5 million recipes in a lifetime. The only losers from this will be those chefs who produce glossy cookbooks in time for the holidays every year.
