Poem To A Black Church

I'm from a "redneck" family;
We never owned a slave.
For God said the Negro should be as free
As Him Who came to save.

We went out and picked our cotton;
That's why our necks are red!
But we know that God has not forgotten
The words that Jesus said.

"As you treat Mine, so I will you"
These thunderous words He spoke;
Free or slave, gentile or Jew --
Our God, He does not joke.

For "stealing away" what should never be owned
My great-great uncle they hung;
To railroads underground he sent the Negros who groaned
Yet he died childless and young.

My great-great aunt for abolition cried
In the middle of the busy town square;
She was said to have unexplainably died;
A modern lab found arsenic in her hair.

They wait for the day when Jesus comes back
And vindicates His children dear;
Because of His heart no courage they lacked
And they faced death and showed no fear --

But the fear of Him Who gave His love
On the cross of Calvary;
He sent boldness from above
That the slaves of sin should be free.

Do not despise our story bold
In the middle of yours so sore;
For the keys to hell and heaven He gives to hold
To all believers forevermore.

That’s very nice I’m sure,
But I only like poetry that involves the word Nantucket

Hanged is used when it is an act of killing someone.

Great-Great Grandfather volunteered for the 7th Wisconsin Infantry. He was late to the war, having only entered service in November 1864. But he did fight at Five Forks and was present at Appomattox Court House. And having recently arrived in the United States from Stettin, Prussia in 1848, and having left five children behind in Watertown Wisconsin to go fight, no he never owned a slave. But he did risk his life to free them.

I know, I know. My English teacher would have a kitten.

But then it wouldn’t rhyme. Also I do come up with a fair amount of contemporary use when searching for “hung” and “noose.”

Well, this kind of stuff IS taken seriously there. I’d sooner talk their lingo and have it heard, than do some limericks and simply not care.

People suffered over sin. A little commiseration is worth an infinity of self flagellation.

Can you translate that into English bro?
