Liberal NY Orthodox synagogue to stop announcing LGBT weddings after complaints

A flagship liberal Orthodox synagogue in New York will stop congratulating same-sex couples on their weddings following a complaint by the Orthodox Union.

The Hebrew Institute of Riverdale in the Bronx will no longer announce the weddings of its LGBT members in its newsletters in accordance with a policy dictated by the OU, the largest association of Orthodox synagogues in the United States. The policy was set out this month in response to complaints from other member synagogues, which take a harder line on opposing same-sex marriage.

Orthodox Jewish law, or halacha, prohibits same-sex marriage, and Orthodox rabbis are not permitted to officiate at same-sex weddings. The Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist movements permit same-sex marriage.

“It is the OU’s unequivocal position that support for, or celebration of, halachically proscribed conduct is fundamentally inappropriate,” the OU statement reads, according to the Five Towns Jewish Times. “Accordingly, the institutional endorsement or encouragement (implicit or explicit) of any conduct that is contrary to halacha is activity that no Orthodox synagogue should allow.”

The statement said the OU is reviewing its congregational standards before taking further action. …

>> will stop congratulating same-sex couples on their weddings

Ironic traditional marriage celebrates DNA, and not the imaginary virtues of homosexuality.

Rabbi Avi Weiss was a character. That I can tell you from first hand experience.

Perhaps what he did was needed, to give LBTQ Jews a place to call home without all the problems they face in the outside world. And for him to be an Orthodox rabbi and do this is something else.

“Human dignity” is a major precept of our religion, including tolerance. As the Beatles sang, “Let It Be”.

Compared to my last rabbi, Avi is a “saint”, if you’ll pardon the expression.

Can’t fight against the Torah. Nominal Christians try to as well, but this just is not going to work out, this repeating of history.

Can you cite me the passage in the Torah that elevates human feelings above the will of God?
Reading "liberal" and "orthodox" in the same sentence transports me to a state of cognitive dissonance. It can't be reasonably questioned that LGBTQWERTYEIEIO is promoted and abetted by Satan.

ROTFL! "Jewish law" PERIOD prohibits it, not "Orthodox" law. The Torah is a hate crime to these JINO pukes. Why don't they just join the Methodists?

Thanks for your nice post. As confusing as homosexuality is these days, one shouldn’t have to choose between it and Judaism.

Well, JTA will always make phony distinctions like that. Of course, when they do that, it’s an open denial of the Torah.

Why not? Scripture does insist on that choice.

I am not orthodox nd I don’t agree with some of the things including a miscarried baby is not to be mourned unless it took a breath. I’m not perfect. I don’t expect homosexual people to be perfect either. That’s ok.

One should always expect them to repent. Persisting in sin (rather than “imperfection”) leads to a sticky end, and to be found fighting against one’s Maker does not end well.

Ain’t no non sinners. Lots of good people try to repent or do better but keep failing. I’m only sin free for a couple hours after Yom Kippur, what with not treating people with respect, bad words, etc. I don’t feel l can put my sins up against other basically good people’s. Who the heck am I?

That doesn’t mean you give up on trying to stop, and it does not mean accepting (and certainly not accommodating) unrepentant sinners by abrogating the divine Law while standing as a preacher of same. There is such a thing as building character.

Can’t find the references I want directly from the Torah but try these re “tolerance”.

“Man is dear to God, for he was created in the divine image. Man is especially dear to God in that he has been made aware that he was created in the divine image, as it is written, “In the image of God he made man”. Gen: 9:6

[From: Great Religions of Modern Man: Judaism”, a selection of Jewish writings, Wash. Square Press, 1963.

” ... you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the Lord ...” Lev. 19:18

Tolerance: “Cardinal precept of the Jewish faith; the Jews have rarely made any effort to proselytize. (”The righteous of all Nations are worthy of immortality.”), P. 222, Torah, - “Dictionary of Judaism”, Dagobert D. Runes, Citadel Press, 1959.

Sorry that I can’t find the book I wanted, with “definitions” of Old Testament quotes and exhortations. I’ve only got about 2,000 books in my house and many are buried in my office right now.

Agreed. I was kind of surprised that an orthodox shul would announce gay unions. But reading that they try to have groups for gay Orthodox Jews, I think that is a good thing. Remember that having a sexual orientation is not a sin.

liberal Orthodox synagogue ?

There is no such thing.

That would be equal to an “atheist Christian church.”

You are right no one is ever free of sin. We are all imperfect creatures. It is not a contest with your friends to see who will be the most sin free but help each other be acceptable to God.

Pointing out your friend’s sins is not judgmental it is charity. If they are attending Temple they are seeking God. If they are seeking God they want to be as pleasing to God as they can. If your friend suffered depression and had a disorder in which she cut herself would you not encourage her to get help and stop. Homosexuality is self-destructive and a grave sin.

Your Rabi can not change the will of God. The will of God is revealed in the Scripture and is unchanging.

To allow your homosexual friends to persist in their sin does them harm. To ever be right with God they must repent this sin and stop this grave offense to God.

I know this is a hard thing. But if your friends are ever to ever to enter God’s presence and avoid the terrors of Hell they must stop committing this sin.

How can these fake groups continue the disingenuous use of the religious title “Jews” when the are anything but in substance?

There’s no dignity, human or otherwise, in sodomy.
