This is the heartbreaking moment an abandoned pup breaks down when she realises her owners have left her and they won't be coming back.

Pit bull cross Electra, four, was dumped at the Inland Valley Humane Society in Pomona, California, on May 17, and put up for adoption.

Footage shows the heartbroken dog looking sadly through her cage before looking down at the floor.

The tear-jerking footage was posted to Facebook by local woman Lolys Menchaka who helps the shelter find its animals new homes.

'Electra represents the face of sadness and reality in the shelters,' she wrote in the video's caption.

'Sometimes I would like to understand owners surrendering their animals and I don't like to judge them, but when you see how the dogs come to the receiving department with their happy faces and they stand all proud I just can't understand.'

Many of the more than 270,000 people who watched the video were struck by Electra's crushing abandonment.

'This kills me. Those eyes. She's so scared. The wagging tail. She still wants to give love. Dogs are so selfless,' one wrote.

Fortunately, it appeared Electra found a new home and is now listed as adopted at the top of the post, hopefully with a long and happy new life ahead of her.
