Southampton winger Nathan Redmond has issued a heartfelt apology to England supporters after his penalty miss against Germany cost the Young Lions a place in the European Under 21 Championship final in Poland.

Redmond saw his crucial penalty kick saved by German goalkeeper Julian Pollersbeck as England crashed out of the tournament with a 4-3 defeat in the shoot-out, following a 2-2 draw after extra-time in the semi-final in Tychy.

The former Birmingham and Norwich winger reportedly left the stadium in tears on Tuesday night but appeared to be more upbeat after taking to social media on Wednesday to reflect on his final ever appearance for the England Under 21 side.

He said: 'Gutted to have lost the semi-finals last night on pens! Sorry. I will continue to keep learning from these experiences and try to improve as a player every day as usual.

'There is work to do and I'm OK with the mental and physical challenges that lie ahead.

'Anyone that knows me well enough know that I'm forever proud to wear the Three Lions shirt on my chest.

'It's sad to close a chapter on my England youth team football in that way but I've gained more than I've lost from the U16s right through to the U21s.'

Redmond went on to thank the various members of staff who have helped him progress from the England Under 16 side, right up to the senior national team - who he made his debut for in a friendly against Germany in March.

'A lot of special memories so on that note I would like to thank every single manager, coach, medical staff, kit-men, security guards and players that I worked with, that helped me learn and grow as a person and a player,' he added.
