MMR wasn't on the vaccination schedule when I was a kid. My parents were conscientious and got me everything else, though. I really should go and get it sorted. I work at a university and with students coming from all over the country, it isn't out of the question that there'd be an outbreak.

Online, his approach is textbook trolling, which is defined by the Urban Dictionary as posting a "deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument."

Well, at least an article finally got the definition of a troll correct. It's been watered down so much over the years most people think it means anyone who simply says something you don't like or agree with.

2017-06-29 3:27:14 AM
It's too bad he is a true believer. A real troller should be able to take up any argument in order to cause discord.

Someone who is a confrontational jerk on message boards because he disagrees with the people there is just a jerk.

Yeah, might wanna stick to the online trolling, instead of going out on tour. I support the cause, but you have to support your children. Better make that money while you can.

I'm glad that I seem, by virtue of poverty, to not be surrounded by this particular strain of stupid.  We poors may do stupid, but 'free' check ups at the health department and 'free' immunizations as well means we are at least disease free when we have our 'hold my beer' moments.  I may hate most of my property tax bills, but the part for public safety, including the health department, is not hated at all.

how exactly is he trolling anyhow? He's holding up a sign that says "Vaccines save lives". True and not disingenuous to what he actually believes. So basically he's protesting. Not trolling.

The drugs for my MS are immunosuppressant and I can't have live vaccines. People who've had transplants are immunosuppressed. There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of adults and children just like me. Anti vaxxers directly endanger us all. I wish there was legislation to charge them with attempted murder.

He's outside with his laptop under a tree...

Who does that?

Are they saying he trolls people under a tree?

He doesn't really look like the kind of person who gets outside much.

Is that the best picture to showcase trolling anti-vaxxers?

That picture and choice of use is confusing for so many reasons

Well, Dr Dog, please go ahead and educate us on the state of New Zealand's paediatric care in the late 70s/early 80s. In 2014 there were 280 cases of measles notified to public health authorities so outbreaks still happen. There were also a handful of mumps cases.

Depends. If they're in their 50s or so, it's plausible.

I've got all my shots except whooping cough, because I reacted badly to the DPT vaccine as a baby. They tried continuing DPT on a half-dose schedule, but I kept reacting badly, so the docs ordered my parents to stop that one. They did get me DT shots to cover the other diseases usually dealt with by that vaccine, and I reacted all right to that.

I had to get all kinds of waivers going through school. I'm glad those waivers exist, but I'm equally glad that they're necessary. I hear they've got a new kind of whooping cough vaccine nowadays, so I'm thinking of giving that a try.

I have a hard time rooting for someone, who is by nature a complete dick, that gets on the right side of an argument and decides to use that as an excuse to be a shiatbag to people on the internet.  Taking it to the streets it's a whole new level of yuck.

But hey, if upsetting people that don't understand something is more important to you than sincere discourse that educates without alienating, have fun watching your hero make a complete cock out of himself.

What would be really funny is if Steven Colbert, John Oliver, or some other entertainer with lots of money to throw around, got him a large panel truck, with a large screen on the side, that he could park across the street from these guys, and would display his latest trolling messages as he typed them.  Maybe some speakers that read his comments allowed for anyone who couldn't or would not read the side of the van.

MMR wasn't introduced in New Zealand until 1990.  Prior to that they used individual vaccines for Measles and Rubella, but no Mumps vaccine. (source)
