I agree that it is insane and shows a complete lack of appreciation for basic physics but many folks in the rural U.S. think nothing of it.  Wander through missouri, kentucky, etc and outside the cities you will see tons of folks that don't seem to know what that belt hanging there is for.

Troopers say the crash occurred around 4:10 a.m. Saturday on Fayette County 49, one mile west of Winfield, when the 2006 Ford pickup the elder Brasher was driving collided with his son's 2004 Chevrolet pickup

Daddy was a Ford man and the kid was GM. Must have been hell around the Thanksgiving table at Golden Corral every year.

Jeffrey Brasher was pronounced dead at the scene. Austin Brasher was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham where he died at 9:18 a.m.

The kids wins on a technicality. But it's still a win.

I assume they were probably driving old POS cars but my vehicle won't let me go 7 feet without screaming for me to put my seatbelt on. That said, the country's IQ went up a couple points when these two idiots died.

My guess is that they disabled the warning then hooked arms while wearing their overalls and danced in a circle whooping it up with some white light'n, then went for a drive to admire their cleverness.

My former BIL, for one.  Professional engineer, travels on the road a lot.  Has a phobia of being trapped in a burning truck aftter an accident, so he prefers to be killed outright or thrown from the truck rather than burn to death.  No amount of reasoning will sway him, and we tried.

You can't reason with someone's phobia.

Assuming the son didn't have any kids, I wonder if this could qualify for a joint Darwin award?  At the end of the day, the net effect was the same...those genes are no longer in the pool.
