The engine was not on fire, it was experiencing a temperature reaccomodation. The passengers will have to pay a small, very large, rebooking fee along with a tarmac shoe damage assessment, and will be given every opportunity to buy back their luggage on Craigslist.

At least it wasn't Southwest. When their engines catch fire, they keep the passengers on board at the gate. For two hours. With free hotdogs and marshmallows, and the long sticks for getting that envied flame-kissed goodness.

Also, if you're going to have an engine on fire, it's best to have it happen when the plane is on the ground.

At this point I really think United is just lip servicing along, hoping Delta or American has a plane crash shown live on every cable news feed (a la JetBlue in LAX circa 2003 - I know, that was a Jeraldo sized non event). When it gets to the point where the equivalent of a jet engine backfire makes the news you have to know that United has been relegated to lower than Allegiant on the respect meter.
