Nintendo: Left Joy-Con issue has been fixed on future Switch consoles

Nintendo says it has fixed the connectivity issue some Switch owners are experiencing on the left Joy-Con controller, and said the problem will not appear in future consoles that make it into consumer’s hands.

The company provided this information in a written statement to Polygon, where it also said there was never “a design issue” with Joy-Con controllers. It described the well-documented issues of the left Joy-Con losing connectivity — first reported on early hardware reviews — as “a manufacturing variation.”

“No widespread proactive repair or replacement effort is underway” with current Joy-Con controllers, the statement read, and Nintendo said “a small number” of units had been affected. As previously reported, the company has a fix, though it wants to make sure the controller’s hardware is really the problem.

“There are other reasons consumers may be experiencing wireless interference. We are asking consumers to contact our customer support team so we can help them determine if a repair is necessary. If it is, consumers can send their controller directly to Nintendo for the adjustment, free of charge, with an anticipated quick return of less than a week. “

With a large number of Switches in the wild — some analysts speculate the console has sold more than 1.5 million units since its March 3 launch — a small number of affected left Joy-Cons could actually be quite a few. The good news? If you still haven’t been able to pick up a Switch, you may not have to worry about the issue.
