instagram users are now able to share a mix of up to 10 photos or videos in a single ‘album’. taking the form of an interactive carousel that fits into your feed like a regular image, the feature will save you from having to choose a single post when you want to document an important memory or event. the announcement comes hot on the heels of designboom hitting a landmark one million followers on the social media site, and frankly, we’re excited to see what new methods of storytelling will pop up as a result.

when sharing images, instagram users are now presented with the option to select multiple entries for the post. after adding them to the carousel, you simply drag and drop them into the correct order and choose your filters. the instagram carousel feature had a test drive in 2015 when swipe-able adverts were introduced to the feed. keeping the same core functionality as these, a series of blue dots will signify that an image can be interacted with, and a quick swipe left or right will guide you through the story.

the carousel adds yet another layer of functionality to what for many is the social media platform of choice. instagram recently added the ability to create ‘stories’ — mirroring competitor snapchat — that would expire after a period of time. these multi-post albums differ however in that they allow users to share multiple perspectives on a single event, and can be revisited as many times as you like.

the update also arrives just in time for the 2017 edition of milan design week, which sees the designboom team document every facet of the landmark fair, all via our dedicated @milan.design.week account. for up close and personal coverage of everything that happens throughout the city’s most important annual event — and examples of instagram’s carousel in all it’s multi-post glory — it’s a must-follow.
