Starting with Batman, some Telltale games will have an optional "multiplayer" mode

Batman: The Telltale Series will debut a new multiplayer feature, which may roll out to future games from the developer.

Called Crowd Play, it will allow players to invite others to contribute to decisions - the core pillar of Telltale games.

Telltale revealed the feature at San Diego Comic-Con, but gave Shack News a more detailed explanation. According to the site's report, players can opt to turn on Crowd Play when they begin a gaming session. This will generate a URL they can share with anyone - keeping it small and intimate among friends, or posting it publicly for anybody to check out.

The URL will log participants in to the game session, allowing them to vote on the outcome at any decision point; a live percentage tally will appear on screen to track voting. In addition to voting on decisions, viewers can give a thumbs up or thumbs down to decisions made - handy if you're outvoted.

Hosts can choose one of two modes on start up. One merely shows the host the vote tally, but allows them to make the final choice - while the other irreversibly locks the host into the crowd's decision.

Crowd Play won't stream game footage due to latency issues; it sounds like it's designed for live events and gatherings, similarly to games like Drawful and Fibbage, where all viewers can see the screen the host is playing on. That said, I don't see why you couldn't use it in conjunction with a Twitch stream. The system supports up to 2,000 participants, apparently.

Telltale plans to bring Crowd Play to more games in the future.

Batman: The Telltale Series launches in August for Android, iOS, PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
